Can someone tell me where I could find a really good, poofy petticoat? Or point me in the direction of a tutorial to make one? And would it be cheaper to buy it or make it? What I'm planning on making needs a LOT of poof, but I know that doesn't come cheap >.>

Do you have a reference for what you are poofing out? My friend has used a basic one, sorta like the Leg Avenue petticoats in the past for her Nurse Chii and it gave her a decent amount of poof. And that was with two layers of fully lined dull satin on top of the petticoat. But most petticoats are basically layers upon layers of gathered tulle on an elastic waistband. I just bought one off of eBay for my Stocking Angel costume that's by Leg Avenue, is 15" long, and will give enough poof to make the skirt stand out. I'm sure if you buy a basic one and it's not quite poofy enough, you could always add more tulle in yourself and get it to your desired level.

I'm going to make Agitha for the Symphony of Goddesses. It's really supposed to be a hoopskirt, but I thought that would be too hard to sit in. As you can see I need some major poof.

For that skirt, I would go with at least four layers of tulle, tightly gathered. You can always add more if you think it's still too flat.

That kind of tulle can be good (I've used it in ballgown petticoats), but you might want something smoother like bridal tulle over the top of it to keep it from picking at your actual outfit. Also, I would watch out buying that tulle since it's got the yardage, but it's only 6" wide. If you are stitching together a lot of short pieces, that's fine, but I would look for something that's 45" or wider for what you are doing.

Tulle is good and I have a few petticoats made from them. But I actually prefer nylon netting for petticoats. Its stiffer and holds its fullness longer. The only complaints about netting is that it can get scratchy. However that problem is easily solved by adding a layer of organdy underneath. My favorite two petticoats have a top layer of taffeta, two layers of nylon netting then the inner most layer of organza. I always get such nice compliments on them. They can be pricey but are worth it.

Sorry to resurrect a pretty old thread, but I have a question about this. A lot of people recommend tulle and chiffon, but I found one online made of organza and I was wondering if that's good quality or not. The only pettis I've ever bought were a cheap, short one at a halloween place that was pretty bad and one from bodyline with zero poof (not sure of the material). The pictures of the organza one look good but I'm worried about it deflating.

In regards to the type of fabric needed, anything that doesn't have a stiff body is eventually going to compact down with gravity. Unless they mention that they spray the organza for stiffness or it has a wire in the hem, it is just not going to be strong enough to battle gravity all day unless you have so many layers of it that it is basically a block.

In my experience, the best thing to make a very fluffy petticoat out of is netting because it is stiff enough that it will stay up all day. Even tulle will eventually fluff down into the cracks to make a solid piece. I have a netting petticoat that, when properly fluffed, will go straight out from my waist and stays out that far for hours.

If you do decide to use Organza or tulle, the thing to take a look for is the edges of the fabric, if they have a very small, 1 inch wide strip that is extremely ruffled at the end, or ribbon, either of those will keep the shape better than just the straight edge of a petticoat because they will lift the ends up instead of letting them sag into each other.

Organza>tulle and chiffon. Those are usually more expensive and have better quality.
