WELL JOIN THE CLUB.
I haven't logged on to cosplay.com for a while so i forgot my older accounts password, incase anyones wondering about my profile xD. Why do 97% of anime clubs seem so terrible....? The leaders are barely there and its usually... just a few people sitting and drawing or watchign anime on some small tv in the corner.... Whats your opinion on this? I really do want to know, you can answer without reading what im about to type next but id like it if you did!! :::: Well anyway, im going to college this september, and when I heard it had an anime club I was so excited!! The last time I was in an anime club was grade 10 before I moved to a school that didnt have one (im not much of the leader type to start my own). Well a bit of research has made me realize that the club I was so happy about is really a gathering of six people who watch Hentai.... Play Pokemon cards... And draw anime... Why is it that every anime club is like this? My old anime club was kinda boring so that I went once every other week instead of once a week BUUT.... She really made an effort to make it interesting for us, unlike the other boring and lame clubs in other schools across Toronto... She would ask our opinion on what wed liek to do, we talked about what animes we liked, we discussed Japanese culture. She was also rich (lol) her family owned a bunch of conveince stores across Toronto so she had money and wholesale access (wat..) to bring to school BOXES of Ramune which we all enjoyed. She also had tons of anime stuff shed bring that she didnt want anymore and would do giveaways. The her being rich part and doing those things was really only once a month, so the other three weeks we'd usually be discussing or planning small events. This was a great exception, because friends I had in other highschools told me that their anime clubs were just three to ten people sitting and drawing and playing cards SO THIS COLLEGE CLUB... Apparently when the president tried to stop people from watching porn or hentai he got yelled at by some club member and I guess he threw in the towel...And from the youtube videos they post (they have three) I can tell its just this random gathering of these really lame anime fans who only go there to watch anime thats usually bleach or naruto(I can do it at home...) or draw (also at home...) or play pokemon cards (dont get me wrong, when I was 8 in 1999 this was my most favourite thign to do) and in the video there was this tv shoved in the corner where this lonely kid was playing some gundam video game on his own. SO WHY DO ANIME CLUBS SUCK? Do they start with founders who have good intentions but are eventually defeated by the porn watching guys? I have nothing against porn but it has no place in an anime club.. I also have nothing against Hentai, but I think Hentai would make an excellent discussion topic, not actually WATCHING it in the club.. And watching anime is about the lamest thing you can do in an anime club.... Everyone has different tastes, people wotn want to come if they havent started the series yet and your airing episode 23 Watching anime movies or Japanese movies should be a monthly thing that the club decides on Ill probably end up joining this september to see if it really is like how a few people i met on devinart who already go to the school have told me its like. They say youll go some days and theyll be playing some random anime episode while the girls are drawing and discussing how hot sasuke is and the guys are watching hentai on a computer, then you go another day and theres only two people in the room eating.......... I guess one of the reasons I want to join is I want to make SUGGESTIONS to the club president of things that could make the club better So what do you guys think? What makes an anime club good? What would you like to do or see or talk about in an anime club? And WHAT would make you want to come back everyweek?? I wanna know so I can have some good suggestions when I go to school or if I end up needing to start up my own club I really want to be a part of a good anime club, a club where members benefit from going and you get to meet a bunch of different types of anime fans, not just sasuke loving fan girls and pokemon card playing guys -_- Also if I've offended anyone by saying something you like is lame I apologize |

My anime club was amazing.
We had content guidelines and people followed them. (school club, meeting on school grounds=no porn) We met once a week for 2 hours, and we did watch anime. Usually 3 episodes a meeting, with a half hour or so to goof off and chat. We voted on what we wanted to watch, usually only short or one season shows. Somedays we watched nothing and just hung out and played anime themed banana grams. We went to cons as a club, and took day trips out to Boston. Anime Clubs can be great, it depends on how they're run

My friend was involved with the Anime club at UT and he had nothing but fantastic experiences. They even roadtripped it to cons and events. Man, even their summer watching schedule is pretty amazing and 90% of the students aren't even there!

The anime club that I went to at my university was also pretty unsatisfying. There was no hentai but everyone just sat in an auditorium and watched anime and when the shows were over they left. Barely anyone talked to each other and there was no chance for me to introduce myself to the group. I will say that I only went to the one meeting so perhaps it was just a bad day, but another friend told me he had a similar experience there.
I"ve found that it takes two major elements to run a good club. The first is a dedicated leader or leadership team to plan things out. The second is members that are willing to participate and in time step up to lead themselves. You have to be the change you want to see. I would suggest if you can't find a good anime club that you find clubs for some of the other "nerdy" societies in your area such as comics, science fiction, RPGs etc. and check those out. I can almost guarantee that there will be people at these clubs who are also anime fans. Libraries are starting to have more book discussion groups for anime, comics and sci fi, and these groups are usually pretty well run. If you haven't already checked it out that might be a good place to start. |

My college doesn't even have an anime club, neither did my high school. So I'm pretty jealous of even your crappy club.

My anime club is somewhat decent. The thing about the clubs I experienced is that the members are simply friends tagging along the actual fans and just hang out and not giving much regard to the anime being played. ... That was pretty much it. Anime playing. But they did made plans for Fanime and such but most of us just did our own thing when we actually got to the convention.
Though the most embarrassing thing about the anime club was that they did a performance in our school's culture assembly based off Vampire Knight and it was horribly executed and embarrassing. I want to seriously help out for next year since I have much better ideas if they decide on doing that again. X_x

tl;dr
But in response to the topic's title: My high school didn't have an Anime Club, but we did have a Cosplay Club. We had to kick out a bunch of members, though, because they were loud raging weeaboos who wouldn't shut up long enough for the president to make announcements. Euh. My college anime club consists of elitest assholes who call Hatsune Miku an anime and if you don't like it, you're shunned. 8|;;

Um, I run an anime club with over 230 members (or did until applying for graduation.) I'm pretty sure it does not suck. If something sucks, make it better. Don't just complain about it. Be an agent of change.

Yeah, we didn't get an "Anime Club" until I was a senior and man, I had senior release so I got to leave early, there was no way I was hanging about. But our principal wouldn't let us have a straight up "Anime Club" because he didn't see the point. We had a bunch of rules and shit about our clubs, you couldn't just start up a club. We didn't even have a drama or art club. Eventually after a bunch of pushing by a sort-of-frenemy of mine she got him to okay a "Japanese Culture Club", in which they watched anime and ate bento. So it was more "Japanese Culture From all the Anime we Watch Club". She got mad every time I called it "Anime Club".
