One note is if you are going to go to ALA, be sure to pre-reg soon because it will likely hit the cap of 4000 people soon.

oH MAAAAANNNNNNNN FUCK

The question is; Do you go or not? Fifty bucks isn't bad for a convention, problem is it's fairly small. You could walk around the dealers room in- twenty minutes top. And it's bad for claustrophobiac people in my opinion, especially walking down that main hall. I suggest that if you just want some plans for the weekend, go check it out.

Oh, thank you! I work with missionstartpodcast.com as a convention reporter and we do a weekly comic book and nerd news podcast called the Rolling 20's.

I work there, and I like it. It's not a commercial convention or trade show. It's more of a social weekend and a good chance to network with other nerds in the California convention circuit. Though you are correct, we have hit our attendance cap the last coupe of years. I believe we lowered it to limit the crowding from last year.

A lot of my friends look forward more to ALA than AX, to the point where if they had to skip one or the other, they would skip AX and go to ALA.

That reminds me...Is anyone going to Otakon Vegas? It's going to be held before ALA.

At this point in time, I'm not sure if I can make it, due to finances.

Incidentally, I'm withdrawing my support for Japan Expo. I thought their non-refundable & non transferable badge policy was really ridiculous, and they still are running it like the European con model, instead of the American con model. (It's not likely that Japan Expo, will be on my checklist of cons in 2014. But DragonCon will be on the top of the list.)

I was asked to staff at Otakon Vegas, but I have a new job and I can't get that many days off. I have to back out of that one.

That's sad to hear about Japan Expo. Is that their only sticking point currently?

I will be at Otakon Vegas. Im not too excited now that Watsuki cancelled, but the way I see it: If the con isnt good, Im still in Vegas! Btw I might be able to offer you free space in my hotel room if you need it.

Seeing as its a first year con, Im not expecting too much from it. I also think holding an anime convention at a casino on the strip is possibly the worst idea I have ever heard. Nothing like underage cosplayers mixing with pimps and hos.

I felt Japan Expo was horribly run and failed for many reasons. The European staff were tolerable at best and terrible conceited smug people at worst. I only attended because of the guest list.

There were a few sticking points, but the Badge policy is one of their biggest sticking point.

Japan Expo have this policy that when you buy the badge, you can't refund it, or transfer it to next year, on the chance that you can't make it to the con. You also can't sell it to someone else. (Most cons would allow you to transfer it to next year or give you a refund.)

Both a friend of mine and I lost $100 each when we bought their Premium Badge. When we told them we couldn't make it, due to unforeseen circumstances, their attitude was basically "tough luck", and they refused to budge.

I'm not going to be stupid enough to shell out another $100, and take that risk again.

I'm also not going to travel a long distance & spend big money on the hotel & transportation costs, when the con has a very low attendance rate. (They were expecting 10,000 people but I don't think they even got more than a few thousand people.)

Here's what one of the attendees who bought the $100 Premium Badge, said on their Japan Expo Facebook:

Quote:
Hi japan expo.

I hope you have time to read this post. So let me begin to express my frustration over being an attendee who purchased a premium badge from the convention, as well as some complaints I have. I hope if Japan expo has a 2nd yr it can improve itself greatly.

First off I bought a premium badge for the reason of getting Sadamoto-san's autograph, and to support what I had anticipated to be an exciting convention. However by the end of the convention I was left more frustrated than happy with the high cost of my badge, and a lot of problems the convention had.

-I almost did not receive Sadamoto-san's autograph. Woke up early, got a first come first serve ticket. Went to the autograph signing session at 11 on Saturday. They announced they were cutting the line short. I BARELY made it in. they let 10 people move on to the 3pm signing. I was #10 to go on. You know how upsetting that is to have wasted from 8:30-12 for nothing????? Please reconsider how you do autograph sessions. For premium badge holders i feel you should AUTOMATICALLY have an autograph ticket, for whomever you wish to see.

-The translator for Sadamato-san. One word AWFUL. He was the most smug, and awkward translator. During The QA at the focus panel for Sadamoto-san, he could barely relay the questions to Sadamoto. Everyone who had asked a question got a completely unrelated answer! Please PLEASE get fluent English speaking translators. As well as get a more humble translator.

-Main connecting hallway from con center to hotel was blocked off for all attendee's. This was ridiculous. Why did you not set-up barcode scanners so people could pass through?

-The fact that Japan expo in america had a lot of the French's convention's policies and rules enforced. Do you guys realize the size difference between a 1st yr event, and the size of the original?

-You do not need such strict autograph policies
-You should not be closing conventions doors at 7pm that is incredibly early. because of this events like masquerade had to be pushed into really early blocks to accommodate the early closing.
-Please get more fluent-English speakers in general. So much frustration in trying to get things figured out, because no one could understand our questions.

At the end of the convention the ONLY pro to having a premium badge, was that we didn't have to drag a piece of paper with us when we entered or left the con. Figure out a better way than that for people to enter and go than to have a paper. However i had a wristband, so it was easy, however as a cosplayer it was awful as i could not hide it.

Quote:
I will confirm that the translator for Sadamoto was the most smug snooty person I have met in a very long time. I get the feeling that JX did little to no research on american cons, tried to directly transplant a french con and acted as if they could do no wrong.

Personally, I think the head honchos at Japan's Expo are too stubborn to really change from their French model to a American model. Their "1st Impact" con had a very low attendance, and there were a lot of empty chairs at their panels. If they keep being stubborn, and stick to the French con model, they aren't going to make it as a con in America.

Thank you so much for your offer. But I don't think I can still make it.

I had booked the rooms for Otakon Vegas originally, but I had to pay some unexpected end of the year bills, so that wasn't fun.

My doctor is also trying to schedule me for a hospital visit for a few days around that time, so it may also hinder things in trying to go to the con. (I won't say what it is, in public, but it's quite essential to my health.) To be honest, I would much rather go to the con than the hospital, but real life sometimes gets in the way. (Trust me, I'm not a fan of hospitals, and a nurse joked to me once that I was scrambling like I was being chased by someone, when I was checking out of a previous hospital stay.)

But once again, thank you for the offer.

And yeah, even if the con isn't good, it's still Las Vegas!! You can't beat the buffet & the shows!

Please feel free to let me know how it went. (The head staffers of Otakon Vegas sounds much friendlier than Japan Expo as well.)

But yeah, there are a lot of restrictions at a casino.

And cosplayers take note: Never bring a weapon prop on a Vegas casino floor. They really freak out on that. The common areas are O.K., but not on a casino floor. Also, do not ever take pictures of people gambling on the card tables or on the gambling areas. The casinos get really, really upset about that.

The feeling that I got from the Japan Expo head honchos, (The owners from Europe, and not the staffers) was that they have this arrogant & condescending chip in the shoulder attitude of "We are not going to change or adapt our French convention model to accommodate you silly Americans. It worked in France, so all you Americans should adapt to it."

By the way, good luck in trying to push for the French convention model in America.

No problem, Choxie. I hope the info helped. (And don't get lost. )

So according to the AX Twitter profile, the first GOH for 2014 will be announced sometime next week. Wonder what English VA or industry name will be the first guest? Obviously won't be any Japanese guests this early in the game.

Also, ugh...Japan Expo USA sounds like a total cluster f :/

ALA is an awesome convention...I have a lot of fun just socializing and running into friends I only see at cons...plus the vibe is AWESOME

AX is announcing a guest next week? Why during a holiday week when everyone's either traveling or earning extra cash?

Probably....eh, random guess, but Danny Choo u w u

And yeah, I'm surprised Anime Vegas had made it this long, Japan Expo USA won't be something to hold your breath for.

I like it, it's nice and cozy. Free food too, which hello, totally appreciated. Its like the sizzle before the burst, ALA and Ax. What I love about AX though, and why I look forward to it so much, is the rush. All those people, all the fun, how hot it is and just things running from when you first get into the con all the way through the night and morning. You really don't want to leave, especially when you make friends there. The memories, what you buy there etc etc.

Hoping for the best, but not expecting anything "jaw-dropping" or exciting. Yeah, It could just be an American Voice actor or Danny Choo!

Yeah paid my $50 to go to Anime LA, Will probably only go at most two days, and I will be commuting from the OC. It will be a lot of fun seeing Con friends and seeing all the fun panels and AMV screenings.

My guess is because so they can sneak a host or not so known guest under the radar? but I hope not!
