I hope that the Masquerade will not be canceled at last minute or like what happen at the recent Acen (someone pulled the alarm, the whole con had to evacuate and the skits of Acen were cancelled as only walk-ons saved a bit for the show.)

My reason of why I hope that is because actually, this is my first time deciding to see a masquerade at AX. In the past, I did only went for 1 day then a 2 day, but never got to see a single skit at all. Also another reason, I am 18 and my friend (18 as well) have decided to watch the masquerade live this year as usually the show is during the night. Plus we always wanted to feel the atmosphere shown in the posted vids of the past AX masquerade skits.

Also I was bummed that AX-Idol was on hold this year. I actually wanted to see it live as well. Yet I am even more bummed that I did proclaimed that this AX was going to be my last con for awhile. Definitely, this is the year of 2012. =_=

Who knows, panels and events do get changed or cancelled even during con. I remember I wanted to attend a panel and there was a sign outside the room saying it was cancelled when I got there on time even though it was already printed on the program.

I am so bummed about AX Idol being on hiatus!! That's the only main event I go to! TT_TT
Plus I feel so bad about the people who work all year for their auditions and stuff

*sigh* so far I am no seeing much promise in this AX, the only things I'm looking forward to is cosplay, dealer's room, Monica Rial, and Panty and Stocking.

And well my general rule with conventions is always make the best out of every bad situation, so even if a bunch of stuff gets messed up, try to have a good time anyway

From the AX forums:

It's not that Anime Expo is trying to "cut back." In reality, AX Idol is managed primarily by Bang Zoom! Entertainment, and without them sponsoring it, there wouldn't be any of the voice-acting or singing prizes through that company. Plus, Bang Zoom! is doing something different this year--they'll actually have an Exhibit Hall booth where they will be holding voice-acting auditions as well as other panels and events.

Yes. There will always be a Masquerade cosplay contest at Anime Expo. (AX Idol is a little different, since Bang Zoom! Entertainment primarily runs that event, while some AX staffers help them out at the convention. AX Masquerade is all done by Cosplay Events Department staffers.)

Hope that helps!

Same here, a few years ago when AX was first going to LA, a lot of us (me included) made a giant ruckus of potential shennanigans that may go down but at the end... it kinda went smoothly!

Now with X-Games (I LOVE X-GAMES) coming along to somehow "steal" the weekend from AX I think ... and I honestly do believe that it will all work out for the best.

There is nothing any of US can do except speculate and make possible conjectures on what MIGHT happen. But strangely enough... it does work out at the end.

No, because the masquerade has historically been one of the worst events to attend at Anime Expo or any other con, and it's about time people learned they can do something else besides wait in line for 4 hours then be bored to death by unfunny skits or boring singing for another 2.

They should make Last Comic Standing the main event.

I picked Last Comic Standing last year over the Masquerade and I am so very glad I did. From now on I will be choosing it for sure I get why it's so important though and honestly I do not want them to take the Masquerade away. They have both going on at the same time for a reason. Having too many people try and go to one event means lots of ppl not being able to do things. But I totally prefer Last Comic Standing Last year's winner was amazing.

I didn't think the Masquerade was the worst event of AX, and I have been attending since AX 1992. If the Masquerade was a bad as Diedrupo is exaggerating, there wouldn't be a audience for it for the last twenty years.

I'm sure most AX attendees would want to have a Masquerade, and those who want to have it completely shut down, are in the small minority. (Like Diedrupo.)

Actually, I'm wondering why Diedrupo is even coming into this thread, since he's not even planning to go to AX in the first place. (He's told people he's never coming back to AX on the various message boards in the past.)

As for Last Coming Standing...While I'm sure it is a great event for some people, it's not really my cup of tea. I come to AX, because I want to see the Japanese artists/creators/voice actors, the voice actress/Idol singer concerts, the anime & manga artwork, the anime toy premieres, the fans, and of course, the cosplay.

I didn't come to AX to see amateur comedians. (And yes, I said "Amateur", because they aren't from the professional circuit, and for some of them, it is their first time being in front of an audience.)

Don't get me wrong, I love comedians, and I would pay over $100 to see them in in Las Vegas & LA.

But again, that's not the reason why I come to AX. To me, AX is about anime, manga, fans, and cosplay. (Just not amateur comedians.)

That event is also not recommended for everyone. I actually watched some of those acts at this event, and some of those "comedians" would blurt out just about every other curse word that you think of in their acts. Some aren't funny at all, and would cover up their act with profanity & insults. (I think I actually heard less curse words in the Las Vegas acts.)

If you do go to this event, be prepared for some raw & coarse language. (Actually, to say that the language is "raw", would be an understatement.)

I enjoyed myself I've been going to AX since 2002 and the masquerades are entertaining, but lately a lot of them have been dull and non interesting (to me), so, I took a different route last year and really enjoyed myself. A lot of their stand-up is actually directed towards anime and video games, so the culture is still in there, it's just a different audience.

To each their own More people that go to the masquerade means a better seat for me at Last Comic Standing. I have nothing against either, I'm all for both and I get why both are there for sure! So, I don't think either side needs to be put down. People put in effort to go up on stage (on both accounts) and some flop (on both accounts) and some do great (on both accounts).

I'm not one to be offended by swearing or what not, so the raw and coarse language doesn't bother me. It is a setting for an older audience with a certain type of humor, that is for sure. If you don't like it, don't go. It's that simple. AX (and cons in general) to ME are about having fun. It doesn't matter how you do it or what you partake in, so long as you're enjoying yourself, go for it. I bought my own ticket, I'll spend it doing the things I enjoy ^^

Well, to each their own. It's your money, and you can spend it as you see fit. Go to the event that you are most happiest with. (Just as it's my money, and I will spend it as I see fit, and I will go to the event that I'm most happiest with.)

Not everyone will enjoy a event that has constant profanity in it, so like I said before, it's not for everyone. Some people don't have a problem with it, and some do. That's just the way it is, so it is up to the own individual to choose which event that they want to go, or are most comfortable with.

^.^ Exactly. Not everyone enjoys poorly written/over done skits either. It's just a matter of what you like! Again, the point is to have fun. I have nothing against either event. I've gone to the masquerade from 2002-2010, so, I obviously don't hate it, haha. I just didn't find it that enjoyable the past few years, so a group of friends told me about the latter, and I tried it out.

I'm not trying to recruit people or saying the masquerade is bad by any means. Each have their goods and bads, it just depends on what you'd rather see. And no one should be judged for picking one or the other ^.^
