Same here, a few years ago when AX was first going to LA, a lot of us (me included) made a giant ruckus of potential shennanigans that may go down but at the end... it kinda went smoothly!

Now with X-Games (I LOVE X-GAMES) coming along to somehow "steal" the weekend from AX I think ... and I honestly do believe that it will all work out for the best.

There is nothing any of US can do except speculate and make possible conjectures on what MIGHT happen. But strangely enough... it does work out at the end.

No, because the masquerade has historically been one of the worst events to attend at Anime Expo or any other con, and it's about time people learned they can do something else besides wait in line for 4 hours then be bored to death by unfunny skits or boring singing for another 2.

They should make Last Comic Standing the main event.

I picked Last Comic Standing last year over the Masquerade and I am so very glad I did. From now on I will be choosing it for sure I get why it's so important though and honestly I do not want them to take the Masquerade away. They have both going on at the same time for a reason. Having too many people try and go to one event means lots of ppl not being able to do things. But I totally prefer Last Comic Standing Last year's winner was amazing.

I didn't think the Masquerade was the worst event of AX, and I have been attending since AX 1992. If the Masquerade was a bad as Diedrupo is exaggerating, there wouldn't be a audience for it for the last twenty years.

I'm sure most AX attendees would want to have a Masquerade, and those who want to have it completely shut down, are in the small minority. (Like Diedrupo.)

Actually, I'm wondering why Diedrupo is even coming into this thread, since he's not even planning to go to AX in the first place. (He's told people he's never coming back to AX on the various message boards in the past.)

As for Last Coming Standing...While I'm sure it is a great event for some people, it's not really my cup of tea. I come to AX, because I want to see the Japanese artists/creators/voice actors, the voice actress/Idol singer concerts, the anime & manga artwork, the anime toy premieres, the fans, and of course, the cosplay.

I didn't come to AX to see amateur comedians. (And yes, I said "Amateur", because they aren't from the professional circuit, and for some of them, it is their first time being in front of an audience.)

Don't get me wrong, I love comedians, and I would pay over $100 to see them in in Las Vegas & LA.

But again, that's not the reason why I come to AX. To me, AX is about anime, manga, fans, and cosplay. (Just not amateur comedians.)

That event is also not recommended for everyone. I actually watched some of those acts at this event, and some of those "comedians" would blurt out just about every other curse word that you think of in their acts. Some aren't funny at all, and would cover up their act with profanity & insults. (I think I actually heard less curse words in the Las Vegas acts.)

If you do go to this event, be prepared for some raw & coarse language. (Actually, to say that the language is "raw", would be an understatement.)

I enjoyed myself I've been going to AX since 2002 and the masquerades are entertaining, but lately a lot of them have been dull and non interesting (to me), so, I took a different route last year and really enjoyed myself. A lot of their stand-up is actually directed towards anime and video games, so the culture is still in there, it's just a different audience.

To each their own More people that go to the masquerade means a better seat for me at Last Comic Standing. I have nothing against either, I'm all for both and I get why both are there for sure! So, I don't think either side needs to be put down. People put in effort to go up on stage (on both accounts) and some flop (on both accounts) and some do great (on both accounts).

I'm not one to be offended by swearing or what not, so the raw and coarse language doesn't bother me. It is a setting for an older audience with a certain type of humor, that is for sure. If you don't like it, don't go. It's that simple. AX (and cons in general) to ME are about having fun. It doesn't matter how you do it or what you partake in, so long as you're enjoying yourself, go for it. I bought my own ticket, I'll spend it doing the things I enjoy ^^

Well, to each their own. It's your money, and you can spend it as you see fit. Go to the event that you are most happiest with. (Just as it's my money, and I will spend it as I see fit, and I will go to the event that I'm most happiest with.)

Not everyone will enjoy a event that has constant profanity in it, so like I said before, it's not for everyone. Some people don't have a problem with it, and some do. That's just the way it is, so it is up to the own individual to choose which event that they want to go, or are most comfortable with.

^.^ Exactly. Not everyone enjoys poorly written/over done skits either. It's just a matter of what you like! Again, the point is to have fun. I have nothing against either event. I've gone to the masquerade from 2002-2010, so, I obviously don't hate it, haha. I just didn't find it that enjoyable the past few years, so a group of friends told me about the latter, and I tried it out.

I'm not trying to recruit people or saying the masquerade is bad by any means. Each have their goods and bads, it just depends on what you'd rather see. And no one should be judged for picking one or the other ^.^

I'm assuming you haven't been to San Diego Comic Con's Masquerade. They don't let anyone get on their stage unlike anime conventions. I've enjoyed the event the last 3 years now and I'm planning to do it again this year.

If I wanted to watch stand up comedy, I would just pop in an old tape of Def Jam Comedy. The last time I went to Last Comic Standing was in 2010, it was nothing but Vuvuzelas and sometimes I can't even make out the jokes or even understand whatever they are saying.

Both events are not perfect, like Hakaider said, to each their own.

Comic Con has FANTASTIC masquerades. I would always choose that for sure. I haven't gone in a few years though, sadly. But they do have *amazing* masquerades.

I do have to say I agree with you Makira. My first Anime Expo was in 2008 and my friend and I decided to wait 3 hours in line for masquerade because everyone told us it was the best thing to go to, and I had seen skits on youtube that looked funny.
Problem is when we actually went, TBH the skits were really dull and unfunny to us. The next year we decided to skip Masquerade and we had heard that the skits were really funny that year.
It seems like Masquerade is pretty much hit or miss, and for me I'd rather not spend hours waiting in the hot sun for a chance that it'll be good or not. I do respect the people who go on stage and created amazing costumes, but it's just not my cup of tea. I've never been to Last Comic Standing before(wonder why I didn't go last year...?) but I may check it out this year.

And here's my thing guys, we may be frustrated with the X-Games, pulling AX Idol may suck, and yes the announcements are being super slow. But we just need to ignore all the negativity and just enjoy it for what it is. Every AX I go to there is always something that goes wrong, and yet I have a great time anyway. The amazing cosplay, the dealer's room, fun people, gatherings, and overall atmosphere. I paid $60 for my badge and dang it I'm going to have a great time even if I have to force myself!
It's all about staying optimistic

We all like different things.

Masquerade is consistently one of the shows in Anime Expo that is completely filled to the brim. It is also my favorite non-concert main event that happens in Anime Expo every single year. I can miss many things in Anime Expo, but I cannot miss Masquerade.

^QFT. My sentiments exactly. d(OwOd)

It pains me that AX Idol is going on hiatus for this year. I've always loved hearing so much awesome new talent coming from the competition. That, and I compete in it myself.

@Diedrupo: Wow dude, really? Masquerades may not be everybody's particular cup of tea, but a lot of cosplayers put in time and effort to make and perform in them. Even if it's just a last-minute, silly dance skit or lip-synch singing, it takes guts to go out there on the stage to perform, much like the amateur comedians in Last Comic Standing. To say that Masquerade has been of the worst events @ Anime Expo would be demeaning the efforts of cosplayers for the past 20 odd some years who have competed in it.

You may not be a fan of Masquerade, Diedrupo, but at least respect the event and cosplayers in it.

Keep in mind that Diedrupo is like our resident troll here in this forum. He likes to makes inflammatory comments, as well as personal attacks, and tries to be as obnoxious as possible. His method of operation is to to make an inflammatory post comment, and then disappear for a few days. After a few days, he'll make another inflammatory comment, and then disappear again. He's not really interested in discussions, finding solutions or helping people, but he just thrives on getting a reaction from his inflammatory comments.

In the past, he has intentionally & gone out of his way to insult AX attendees, former AX staffers, and even AX staffers here. There's more than a few times that AX staffers had to correct him for his inflammatory comments. I'm surprised that he hasn't been banned yet by Cosplay.com moderators yet, even though some people have lodged complaints about him.

That's the trouble with internet bullies & trolls. They are very brave when they hide behind a computer, but take that away, and they don't have the guts to say it to your face.

As I said before, I'm still wondering why he even comes to this thread, because he's not even planning to come to AX. (I guess he still needs to get his kicks by being getting a reaction from people here. You could obviously tell that he craves the attention.)

If you see his name ever appear on this thread, always be prepared for an inflammatory post.

No Masquerade is perfect at any con. You can't have a show where each and every entry has really gorgeous costumes and/or always-entertaining skits. You're always going to have a Masquerade/Costume Contest that will have a mix of both good and bad costumes, and well-done and boring/terrible skits. What you get is always up in the air, and it's up to you if you want to spend the hours waiting in-line before the show begins, (or get there after it's started) and you choose to sit in that seat for the next few hours.
