Thoughts on "Every-Day" Cosplay

Please read before posting.

I don't mean going around every day in a costume, nor do I necessarily mean what many people refer to as "Hot Topic" cosplay. I'm also not speaking in terms of fan-items either, i.e. chain-chomp earrings.

The concept I'm referring to is taking a particular costume/outfit and adjusting it for an every day- wear-out-anywhere piece of clothing. This would include: pants, shirts, outer-wear, sweatshirts, accessories, and any other everyday items you can think of and be achieved by adjusting already existing clothing and/or hand-making clothing. Another method would be to take a piece from an existing cosplay and apply it to everyday wear.

I'm an avid fan of many things geek, but I don't get to go out to Cons very often as they are costly at the moment. Nor can I afford to make the extensive costumes I would want to make. I was thinking that this alternative might be an effective way of getting my cosplay "fix" and showing off my geek colors in public without being overly direct.

I would just like some feedback on whether other people have tried this and pulled it off or not. Examples and ideas would be very much appreciated.

My Doctor Who outfits have been incorporated into my wardrobe. It's the only way I can justify what I spend on the screen accurate items.

I've worn the short jacket from my One Penn cosplay a few times, and the belt has become part of my wardrobe

This is the closest I come to wearing a cosplay in public casually.

I'll be sticking to characters in more everyday clothing until I build up my skills, so I'll definitely be "stealing" their clothes (if they're durable enough, since I need to build up my sewing skills too). Eventually, though, I'll get around to the ones that wear medieval dresses and skintight bodysuits and Imperial uniforms... those are more likely to stay costume-only.

Much of my wardrobe was inspired by Dorian, from the manga From Eroica With Love. He wears "flashy red shirts" and since the series was started in the 70s, tight bellbottoms, and often boots. I like flare-leg pants and boots, and cosplaying him made me realize I look pretty good in flashy red shirts...

Just the other day I was in a thrift store, came across a red silk shirt, and heard that pesky British art thief say in my head, "Oooh. Mine." Yes, Dorian, it is.

All of my costumes so far are mostly made of everyday items. Only a few of them, I needed to buy a prop or specific iconic article of clothing.

I think it's sort of nice. :3
I also wear my Karkat shirt as daily wear or use the shoes I buy for some characters casually.

Well with my Reno cosplay.. I have worn the pants casually.
Also the shoes (when I can't find my other shoes for whatever reason)

As far as my Riku cosplay goes.. so far I have won his vest casually.
And the shoes that I painted just for the outfit.. I wear those almost everyday.

You are talking about characters street clothing cosplay. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

I wear Yoko's skull clip out in public

There isn't much else with my cosplays I could incorporate into every day life without looking like a bit of an oddball. But, there are times when my friends and I just dress up and meander around. Usually if we go hookah and are feeling especially nerdy, we'll dress up and go to our favorite smoke shop. But other then the Yoko clip, there isn't really anything that I do D:

I wear parts of costumes as real wear all the time. Sometimes it's to test the fit and movement of a jacket, sometimes it's because, "Why not?" If I can't find a good answer to that, I'll do it (and yes, there are times when it's inappropriate--wedding, formal occasions (unless you have a formal outfit for a cosplay that doesn't look costume-y....), a real job with a uniform/strict dress code, etc)

I'm also beginning to design my own clothes, and some of them are inspired and modeled after a specific character, but in a slightly more street-wear way.

Jackets are the big thing, though. I have three cosplay/character jackets, all wool, two lined. My favorite is high-waisted, so I can only wear it with one pair of jeans. The others, I can wear with anything. And I do. I love odd jackets.

Wearing parts of costumes as everyday wardrobe is pretty common.

Seriously, if I had the time, I would open up my One Piece and Bleach artbooks and copy every piece of gorgeous, trendy, funky street clothing that Oda and Kubo have ever designed. And never wear a plain old t-shirt again.

I think if it's only parts of costumes (accessories or 'normal' looking clothing) then it would be perfectly fine. I know a lot of cosplayers (me included lol ) Like to buy clothes or accessories that could double for normal use and cosplay use. For example, I sometimes wear my James (Silent Hill 2) jacket out, since I don't use it for cosplay anymore and it's rather normal looking.

However, I think there are some people who take the idea of 'every day cosplay' way overboard. Like, I know this one girl who will randomly cosplay Alois (from Black Butler) to school. Like, full-on cosplay. To me, I think that's just a bit extreme, especially in a school environment :|
