Cosplaying non anime characters to an anime convetion?
I just realized two characters that I am planning on cosplaying to an A-kon are from cartoons, and not anime, and I've heard that when people don't go as anime characters to an anime convention it makes people angry...is that true? Because I don't wan't to bother people. Me and my sister were planning on going as Numbuh 4 and Numbuh 3 from Codename kids next door, because we used to love that show and that couple, but because it's not a very big show with anime fans, would it be weird if we went as them?

Once you do those three things, any decision you make afterwards is your personal decision and you are free to do as you like. A little bit of self-reflection should is all you need for matters like this.

It doesn't matter who you cosplay at ANY convention, Mind you it's good to keep in mind your audience (Okay anime con=there fore anime characters are going to be more noticed/well observed) but still If you like Edward scissorhands and other people at the con like him, they'll see you.
Another thing is People do Meme cosplays and internet based costumes as well as video game and subculutural costumes.... In short, Cosplay what you want, It shouldn't bother people unless you're going the really really skimpy clothing route...if so, make sure to cover up the needed areas and just carry it with confidence. If people rag on you for it, that's a personal problem....and they need to realize there are more cosplays out there than mainstream Naruto/Bleach/Pokemon/etc. costumes that make a Convention much more fun to watch and look at!

My biggest issue is the double standard involving anime cons. Not sure why it's cool to have "old spice guy" """cosplayers""" (triple quotes) at anime cons but not at star trek cons. There is a Yaoi Con near me in the future and I joked that I wanted to attend just to see how many batman or storm troopers showed up.

I myself cosplay non-anime characters all the time and in alot of cases, they get more attention than my anime cosplays. Movies, Video Games, Tokusatsu, Western Cartoons. Source material is irrelevant to me. If I wanna dress up as a certain character than I do just that.
If somebody has a problem with my costume NOT being from an anime, then that's their problem, not mine. I'm having fun, get over yourself.

To quote one cosplayer on here, you paid to get in just like them, so you can wear whatever the fuck you want. (And cartoons and anime aren't that far removed, so I wouldn't bat an eyelid.)

And honestly, no one will ever get mad at you for wearing a non-anime costume. If they do, they have a) serious personal issues they need to deal with and not take them out on you, or b) a 99.99% probability of never having been in cosplay - ever. Aside: A-Kon is one of those conventions that embraces originality and equality. Their costume contest allows all genres, types, and original characters to enter, and it's been like that since year one. You will find that it is anything but an anime convention. Every genre you can think of will be there.

That kind of mentality is why some people feel justified in shouting obscenities and behaving in a rude manner at sporting events. I would hope that people would wear something that they personally enjoy, not something just because their ticket gives them the right to "wear whatever the f**k they want"

Actually, believe or not people get sick of seeing the same characters over and over, and in fact you'll surprise more people when you cosplay someone that isn't very popular. Go for it!

A-Kon sounds like an Anime con I'd attend- welcoming to ALL cosplay, not just Anime.
I don't get all shirty if I see Anime characters at the local sci-fi/mixed genre cons, if they're following the con rules and behaving themselves, I don't care what anyone wears. I do OC cosplay- by the logic of the "On topic costumes ONLY" crowd, I wouldn't go to cons, period. |

The people who have a problem with non-anime cosplays at anime cons are a small minority. Even then most of them don't actually have the guts to say anything about it to people's faces, they just moan about it online. I have to point out that it's odd that these types never seem to complain about video game cosplays at anime cons. Even ones that aren't Japanese, it's like these people decided all video games are anime or something.
Most of my cosplays are anime but I do have some that aren't and I have never gotten grief for doing non-anime. The only person who has said something about it to my face is my brother, who doesn't go to cons anyway.

Agree so much with this! That bugs me more then when people whine and complain about say comic characters. So comic characters are not allowed but your Assassins's Creed cosplay is ok? (Not hating on Assassin's Creed just using it as an example)

Before this thread melts into banter about which "cosplays" are acceptable at certain cons or how unfair it is that some cosplays are more accepted than others, I would like to toss in more food for thought that encompasses any con, cosplay, or genre.
In addition to what Mesoian said, consider the following: - The genre of the con is likely what "most" people will be cosplaying from. Decide whether you want to be in the majority or minority or if it even matters. - Unless there are strict rules about dress code, you do not need to adhere to cosplays from said convention's genre only. - Ask yourself whether you "need" to be recognized or can be happy just wearing something you like and have fun that way. - Whatever you wear, hold your head high and realize not everyone is going to recognize and love whatever you are cosplaying as. You cannot please everyone, so worry about making the best choice for yourself + your situation and go have fun. I personally like seeing a variety of costumes from different genres though I hold but one opinion. When I finish my Legolas costume (finally), I planned to wear it to anime conventions for a few laughs. The thought of this angering a few people has never even come across my mind, that is how "important" it is to me, which is not at all.
