Steampunk weapons

Hello everyone,
I'm new to all and everything cosplay.
Anyway, I'm still trying to understand the whole steampunk genre and I'm curious on what types of weapons are most likely "appropriate" for the whole steampunk style.
Like can people use japanese style weapons (katanas, yumis, bo, etc.)? What about guns, how do you make a steampunk gun? If not then what time period is best suited for weapons like these?
Are there any books, anime, shows, manga, etc. that I can use as references to help understand this a bit better. Does Black Butler count? Or Fullmental Alchemist? OR the infernal devices? Doctor Who?

AND sorry if these sound like really dumb questions, I'm just curious on how to make weapons associated to steampunk.
Thank You

I also forgot to ask about vehicles, Like hoverboards, hoverbikes, hovercars, reagular bikes, regular cars, regular bicycles, etc.

Again thanks ^^

I make steampunk guns and props out of industrial junk. Hear is a link to the post from another thread. It can be quite time consuming but I think its worth the work to use the proper materials vs. the more common painted nerf and plastic guns.

Oooh, I really like your use of electrical components .

I try to do about the same with what parts/pieces I can find. I have incredible luck with thrift stores at times.

I also build steampunk guns and accessories, my personl preference is to include wood in with my materials for each build. I just like the look/feel, but everyone's taste is different of course .

I have some pics of my work here: I've made a few other smaller pieces but I havent posted them yet.

Diverse, it really just depends on what type of character you want to portray and what kind of things you feel your character would carry around on their person .

The best part about steampunk is that there really is no right/wrong with any of it. Heck, if you want to be a hover bike riding, katana wielding, pirate/senator/scientist, then dangit, go do it

I'm always adding to/taking away from my costumes when I get an idea. So for me, nothing is pernament yet lol.

Since Steampunk is an aesthetic when it comes to costumes, the weapons can be any type you want. Guns, swords, rayguns, lasers, anything you can imagine putting a steampunk look on. Just Google 'steampunk weapon' and I'm sure you'll get a lot of different ideas.

I am actually building a portable long range sniper LMRC (Linear Magnetic Rail Cannon) for my steampunk Alice outfit. it's a long range anti tank, anti personnel device. Unlike a conventional sniper cannon its a rail cannon and has an insane range. however it will not be small either and I am thinking of putting a Tokamak reactor on it to power the thing lol - in case you were wondering yes I majored in physics and did work on Tokamaks as well as played with rail cannons. Steampunk doesn't have to be accurate but it allows me to do things I would never dare to do in real life. Not to mention it is improbable with outr level of technology right now to make a portable rail cannon or a small Tokamak. I think the smallest was like 40 tons.. try carrying that around lol I am going to mount a video camera into it for the scope. The idea is to try and make it as functional, within limits of course, as possible. i hate it when people stick gears on things and call it steampunk. Eewwww!!

If you ever get a chance to play the game Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magica Obscura, it has an *excellent* bevy of steampunk gun and melee weapon concepts throughout. It's one of my very favorite pieces of steampunk fiction, and one of the surprisingly rare instances of a fullblown steampunk RPG.
In general, the originating principle of steampunk technology is to look at the 19th century, and then make that fantastically high tech. From there, people get more creative and put their own little twists on things (merging it with post-apocalyptic aesthetics or Flash Gordon-style retrofuturism, etc. etc.).
