The problem with Labeled Smoking Areas is the assholes blowing smoke in your face in line are properly NOT the type to follow common courtesy. I mean, they’re retarded enough to smoke in a lineup of people..you really think they’re get out of line to head over to some roped off smoking spot?

I don’t think there is a need for a “smoking area” as much as a need for everyone to just think/act logically. Simple: moved away from crowded areas. My sister smokes and she just walked over to the parking lot well away from everyone and the convention centre, problem solved.

Smoking areas only work if there are 100 volunteers policing the crowd...and I think AN staff have better things to do. Sadly, we might have to just deal with Asshats.

Smoking spots will not help anything as people do not use them. Once people are outside they assume they can smoke anywhere, even when large signs say 'you can't smoke here'.

Any university campus will show that even university educated smokers will still stand in front of the big 'no smoking here' signs, right next to the doors of things like libraries.

Its also impossible to enforce.

I think the next step in terms of smoking bans will be public places, or places where large crowds gather, which would include things like the TCC and CNE etc. I know it was being mulled over by the health department this year.

That would be a good thing. I know a lot of people have trouble with the smell of smoke. But I agree, it would be difficult to enforce a smoking ban. People will do what they do, I believe there were people who were smoking other than tobacco....

Oh yeah, I smelled it next to TCC 1 when I was putting up the signs. Def cannabis in usage.

I just want to point out that isn't there smoking bylaws that it's illegal to smoke while loitering outside a public place? There was people smoking right by entrances and exits off the TCC.

So far I have not seen anything for directly outside of a public space.

Phase One - October 8, 1999: Smoking in workplaces prohibited
Phase Two - June 1, 2001: All Restaurants, dinner theatres and bowling centres must be smoke-free, except in a designated smoking room
Phase Three - June 1, 2004: All bars, billiard halls, bingo halls, casinos and the racetrack must be smoke-free, or provide an approved designated smoking room

Then it says: As of 2006, the Smoke Free Ontario Act addressed smoking in public places, work places and youth access to tobacco

This seems to be incorrect as when I looked up the actual act it says: The Smoke-Free Ontario Act prohibits smoking in workplaces, enclosed public spaces and also in motor vehicles when children under 16 are present.

So the keyword is enclosed. Strangely I know that many workplaces and malls have rules saying you can't smoke within X meters of the buildings. The TCC may even have rules like that - and likely do - but it means that they would have to enforce it. I'm not even sure if they are able to ticket people for that?

Smoker here, apologizing for other non-polite smokers, I suppose.

My staff and myself personally only smoked by the ashtrays outside of the Sheraton. So, there's that. We were also polite enough to move further away when there were children present. So... We're not all assholes.

What bothered me at the Sheraton was the 'Doll North' people who would come outside to spray whatever it was on their doll faces or something... Sealant, maybe? They were in the smoking space, and they were wearing some sort of ventilator, which is all nice and dandy for them, but even though I choose to pollute my lungs with tobacco, I never chose to inhale whatever foul chemicals you're spraying on your stuff. Especially if it's bad enough that YOU have to wear a mask, but the people around you don't get that courtesy.

Also, in regards to the handicapped parking dealie:

This was on Saturday, that I noticed it anyways. The entirety of the front handicapped parking spots were chained off, and the TCC staff member told me that I would have to park at the handicapped parking at the back. This wasn't a large problem for myself, as I was Staff, so I could use the rear entrance as I pleased. Other handicapped attendees would not have been so lucky, and again, I reference the fact that this is a gross violation of the AODA and the TCC, if not Anime North itself, would face fines up to $50,000 or $100,000 (not entirely sure which, depends on if the violator is found to be a corporation, source: http://www.aoda.ca/?page_id=8)

So... Kind of a big deal. As a Staff member, I'm honestly kind of baffled that this happened, and I'm glad no one seems to be raising a snit about it, besides me. I know AN is generally VERY handicapped-friendly, and I know we have many handicapped attendees. So I'm just trying to look out for them, and the convention. (Personally, I have nerve damage in my right leg from a car accident, but those who are wheelchair-bound would have had it the worst in this regard.)

I didn't understand that. They did it Friday evening, then never again.

Where are the front handicap spots (as in if you could show me on a map) - i'm curious as I don't think I noticed anything different this year.

I would email access@animenorth.com. Cathy Schutt is in charge of mobility access and should be made aware. She possibly already knows but should inform her anyways.

It would be the TCC held liable afaik since its their grounds and they are the ones controlling the parking lot - but if possible it would be nice to do something about it. I know the TCC are not the most co-operative of bunches (at least with things I have to deal with) but I mean, its their ass on the line.

This was my fifth year in a row and here's a few things I noticed:

Complaints

1. I was sitting beside the model display cabinet for over an hour on Sunday (Probably around an hour and a half). Someone came up to me and asked if they could take their models out of the case and I said 'Oh I'm sorry, I'm not staff so I don't know'...The guy checked the case and the whole thing was unlocked, so he just took his stuff. That means people's property were sitting in a room not being watched over by anyone for over an HOUR and anyone could have taken them. For all I know, the two guys who took models while I was there might have been stealing.

2. I found the layout just weird this year. I liked the way it was set up before. Crafters Corner was better I'll admit, but I didn't like the 'Display Tables' room. They used to have a seating area in there and I found myself missing that greatly. I also thought the photographers got the short end of the stick. Their location was just completely unappealing and I feel like they deserved a better spot.

3. Yet ANOTHER case of being told the wrong thing by a volunteer. Got told I could go in Group Reg. line Thursday night by a volunteer even though I only had 5 passes to pick up (which I though was weird to begin with). Get to the line and then get told by a different volunteer member I had to go all the way back to the end of the single admissions line. I refused because at that point the line was already outside...They ended up letting me cut the line to a spot where a few of my friends were waiting, but that shouldn't have happened -__-

4. This is a hotel thing, but I found that the staff at Raddisson was very uneducated and rude. Checking in was literally painful. Other then the maids, sadly enough, the maids were the kindest and most helpful. And I would actually like to give them a shout out, they were all very lovely and made my stay way better.

Compliments

1. A HUGE shout out to the volunteer security staff (and people in the radio room)! They helped me with a pretty big issue on Saturday night and I found all the people there to be extremely nice. It's sad when a serious issue turns into one of the funnest parts of your weekend, but I'm thankful for that. Those people seriously deserve some recognition. Thank you!~

2. The Dealer's Room was much better this year! I found there to be a lot less illegal merchandise and the dealer's to be more pleasant and helpful. There was also more room, which was much appreciated.

3. Shout outs to the girls at Cafe Delish! It was my first time going and they were simply lovely, and even the guys they had helping them were nice and cheerful. It's was just a great (well organized!) event.
3b. Also a shout out to Pinku Project! They pretty much made my whole weekend worth while. Their concert was amazing, they were wonderful to meet in person, and I just could not get enough of them! They need to come back next year!

Overall...The convention was still good :3 I had a good time, and I'm sorry about the complaints ;^^

The front handicapped spots are numerous, the ones that were chained off were the ones by the AN entrance. The entirety of the front parking spots were chained off (at least on the Saturday, I was at the Sheraton at all other times).

And yes, I already emailed her, was going to bring it up at the post-AN meeting, but I think an email will suffice.

And yeah, it would most likely be the TCC held liable, but I'm not 100% sure of the agreement that they sign with AN regarding the space and such. Best to be wary. I'm glad I only have to deal with the Sheraton staff, they've always been extremely helpful.

I'll say I did like the display tables room simply because it meant they were not taking up space in the other halls but were still there for those interested. As for where the photographers are - Mixed feelings for sure.

It's nice they had their own spot, and in an area with more traffic... but I think the hall isn't the best spot for them. I was thinking the rooms at the front of the TCC would offer a better spot.
Where would you put the photographers booths?

I sorely miss having at least one photographer booth a the DT this year. Because of my costume (restricting layers and zori that make would walk in baby steps naturally. lol) and the heat I pretty much parked myself at the DT on Saturday but really want to get some shots done.

The lover level of the main foyer of the DT never gets used where the Ballroom's are above. The area in general get a lot of traffic and having a sign that points downwards to indicate their are photo shoot area/rooms would be an option.

Next year at least I'll be able to move my legs properly with the costumes options I have for Saturday. lol
