Hmm, how about..... PAPER

You could likely build something similar with foam (as it has structure).

Only issue with paper is rain will kill it. Real feathers also take a beating in the rain. Foam wouldn't fair badly.

Decided to make a costume from Nardack illustrations as my main cosplay~

I have my fabric and wig+wefts for it! But then, I've had the fabric since last September... <_<;

Hmm... I do like the foam picture... but I have had some bad experiences with foam ripping with the smallest puncture. Your felt idea might be good too... Lots to experience/think about.

Could always be a mixed media experiment? Would give a more dynamic look to it. Could use paper or foam for the long feathers and felt for the smaller ones.

Can even use cardboard with foam for a stronger backing - which is great in a con environment.

That's a good idea! I may have to try that, at least on the bottom of the dress. I want the wings to have some flexibility just in case someone bumps into me.

Not started, but I have figured out my choices and am narrowing them down. Which is probably a bit slower than usual, really.

But the freedom of summer is generally a smart time to work on stuff if I happen to figure it out.

Im starting on my Alphonse elric black armour set. I hope it turns out well. And I'm thinking of doing an Entei Ginjinka but that is still on the table still looking for places that sell cheap faux fabric fur.

I think I've pretty much settled on doing Kenneth Blackwell of Trauma Center this coming year. I'd like to try making it myself from scratch, but I have absolutely no idea where to even start. @_@ This would be my first time sewing majority of the costume myself, if I decide to go this route.

I guess the first thing I should figure out is what the crap those kind of shirts are called. DX

And I will not be leaving any purchases within a month of the con. I did this with the wig and got it a week before the blasted thing. Much rushing was had since I only had 2 days of which I could potentially get it styled. :S

I haven't started yet, although I'm planning. I've decided I want to do Aika Granzchesta (from ARIA) for sure, and am just working out things in my head. I want to carry around her gondola oar, but will probably just commission that as I have no experience with props and have such limited space in my apartment >_> So, for now, just contemplating construction of the outfit itself ^^

I'll probably start next month or so, just to give myself time to do non-sewing stuff for a while.

I'm planning this month and starting on it next month. Hoping to avoid the "oh god AN is in 3 weeks and nothing is done" panic that was this year.

May I suggest some sort of thin plastic sheet? Perhaps mylar, vinyl or maybe some other material. Come Christmas time, you might be able to find such a material being used as wrapping paper... or maybe you can hit a crafting store.

Waterproofing spray could work. I used to spray paper with it to do science demos and it worked like a charm.
