Issue with sleeves

I'm using a blazer pattern, but altered it for a costume and also took it in a couple inches to fit my friend.

Now when my friend wears it, he isn't able to lift his arms up very high without lifting up the jacket too. Is that normal for blazers? Or did I mess up the sleeves when I was altering the pattern?

Here is what it looks like:

If it's not supposed to be like that, tips would be appreciated! I always seem to mess up on sleeves, so I'm kind of confused on what to do =/

Nope - it's totally normal. Annoying as hell, but normal. Blazers, suit coats, and jackets are typically patterned with stupidly tall sleeve caps (like 5-6 inches) and narrow biceps so that the jacket looks nice and crisp when your arms are at your sides. The trade-off is the inability to raise your arms or have any appreciable range of motion that real, living people need.

There are only three things you can do to try and remedy the problem in this kind of pattern:

1) Raise the level of the armscye. You need it to be as high in your armpit as possible without being uncomfortable to minimize how much the jacket rides up when you raise your arm.

2) Alter the sleeve pattern so that it has a shorter cap and wider bicep.

3) Add a gusset into the armpit. (A gusset is a wedge of extra fabric cut on the bias.)

Ah ok, good to know! It was kind of driving me crazy. And thanks a lot for the tips! I'll look into doing one of those options
