I had dinner with my family a week ago and the topic of my weekend before when I went to a con came up. I showed them one of my latest pics, to which my dad thought I was wearing a helmet instead of a wig and my mom said I looked Japanese. My brother didn't take kindly to my mom's stereotype comments though and tried to get her to stop.

I showed my mom the clip-in bangs I just bought. She said "It's $89?!" and I said "Where are you seeing $89?" It only costs $9. Apparently, she mistook the dollar sign for an eight. She should be better about wearing her glasses. Seriously, I doubt clip-in bangs would ever cost that much, even human hair ones.

Way back when I was fifteen or so, my mother brought me to my first convention. She was curious about everything, so she stuck around. My clot of friends went to panels, ate lunch, had pictures taken, took pictures, the whole nine yards.

Sometime in the middle of lunch she asked me what the Mister/Miss Trap Pageant was. I wasn't sure how to explain crossplay, so I basically gave it to her in the most blunt way possible. She nodded. I wasn't sure what that meant.

Later on we ran into the winner of the pageant. She thought it was the most amazing thing that a guy could look like such a beautiful woman. She complimented him, got into a conversation... I had no idea that my mom was so accepting of stuff like that. She got a gold star that day.

Well, when I first cosplayed, she just laughed and said "You look so cute! Oh my god wait let me get my camera! Do a pose!" I was Ash Ketchum season 1.

She's only been briefly to one con, to drop my brother off. It was a gaming con, but there were still some really big, fancy, and skimpy cosplays walking around (Korean games and their skimps).. she just kinda laughed and wondered how the women could be comfortable in those clothes.

My dad just looks everywhere but at the cosplayers and says nothing. It makes him awkward. xD

My parents are pretty cool about everything, except for the money, and when I wanted to got to ACen last year, mom was worried about me driving down. But my mom made my first cosplay, and she kept saying, "No, you can't do that, it won't work!" I insisted, and, lo and behold, it worked, and the costume looked awesome.

The funniest thing that ever happened to me, though, was when I ordered my first wig, a long black one for Kikyo. The day it arrived something really upset me, and I was crying a lot. My dad came into my room, saw my new wig in its box, and asked if he could put it on. Imagine a 6'7" muscular man standing in a waist-length shiny black wig. I couldn't stop laughing.

I was styling my Hatsune Miku wig when my dad came in and stared. Since he's a Vocaloid fan (BEST DAD EVER.), he said:

Him: "I-I'm sorry Miku. I'll leave. Don't shove a leek down my throat." *Leaves*

I was styling it with a 'o3o' face for the rest of the night.

I mentioned this in another thread, but when I lived with my grandmother she helped me sew a cosplay for the first time. It was Maha from .hack//sign, an anthro cat character. She called it my 'Kitty Costume' And for a long time she assumed that everyone that went to these conventions dressed like cats. From then on she's always called my cosplays Kitty Costumes, as our little in-joke.

I was telling my mom about how I want to use my real hair for my next costume because I don't want to buy a wig for it.

Her response: "But you already have a wig!"

My little cousin is coming to the next con with me, which will be her first con, and she doesn't have a cosplay. I said I'd put cat ears on her, and my mother said "but couldn't she just borrow one of yours?" My cousin and I look nothing alike, ergo she looks nothing like the characters I've cosplayed, and also has not the slightest interest in cosplaying them. Mom doesn't quite get what cosplay is all about.
My dad is better about it, but still keeps suggesting that I should wear my Mey-Rin cosplay if I ever apply for a job as a waitress.
Me: Yes, thank you, Father. Do give me directions to all these upstate New York cosplay maid cafes that I'm supposed to apply for jobs at.

It's been 2 years since I started cosplaying and my dad still calls cosplay "cosmo play." Not sure if he does it out of spite or if he just doesn't remember the name.

my parents are nothing but supportive :3 They don't understand half the shows and books my sister and I talk about all the time, but they listen to our fan girl ramblings anyway. As for cosplay they think it's okay since it makes us happy and we get a lot of comments, usually from my mom that are usually hilarious. My dad is really great at sewing and actually made me a tie for my Halloween costume last year (10th doctor) and a Fionna hat for my sister's costume. The year before he even made me an apron! My mom on the other hand has a lot of knowledge and will talk to us about who we're going to be and how we're going to make it.

My favourite parent moment so far though was when my sister was showing our mom Mami Tomoe's transformation sequence from Madoka Magica, since she wanted to be her. The only thing my mom said was "Why are her boobs glowing?"

My parents are cool with it and support it completely
My mom has actually worn mine before O.o She's a middle school teacher and on halloween, they let the teachers dress in costume. She comes home wearing my Organization XIII cosplay and holding my keyblade! I freaked out a bit, but after realizing that my cloak was still in one piece, i thought it was pretty cool XD
Though my grandmother (who helps me make my cosplays) still doesn't get the concept, but at least she doesn't really question it!

While this wasn't my parent/guardian, this one elder gentlemen with 2 younger children saw my cosplay group when we were going from a convention to a place to eat. He said to the kids "I think we're in a place that we don't belong..." My group, the three of us, still use the quote as humor when we have to walk outside of a convention in our cosplays.

I've recently discovered that my mom collectively calls all outerwear a coat:

Isaak's coat: Coat
Pegasus' jacket: Coat
Saphir's sparkly dress shirt: Coat
