Importing toy guns to the US.

Does anyone know the US customs policy on toy gun imports. I'm cosplaying a female Yukio from Aoi no Exorcist and the only toy props that are convention safe are over seas. Or if any one knows a place I can get a pair in the US that are convention regulation please tell me. Thanks!

Plenty of kids toy guns in store with the orange tips are perfectly con safe to..no need to buy ones overseas. You just repaint or respray them if they need to be another color. I think toys rus has like a whole area for them.

Been years, abut about 8 years ago I imported a pretty realistic looking gun toy, and it got here fine. Got it from ebay though :/

I don't expect you'd have a problem, but it would probably be a good idea to check the US Customs and Border Protections website for specific guidelines: CBP.gov.

Fair warning: like most government websites, their website is a bit confusing to navigate >_<

You can also check ebay for airsoft guns. They feature the orange tips, but since they look realistic, make it appear as if it were not loaded.
My best advice when handeling airsofts at a con would be as follows

Keep the clip out of the gun when walking around the convention center. You may only put it in the gun when posing for a pic. But be sure to take it out of the gun after the pic has been taken.

Make sure your airsoft cannot fire.
In cases of electric airsofts- remove the battery pack from the gun
In cases of gas operated airsofts- Make sure there's no gas in the gun
In cases of spring operated airsofts- Just don't cock the gun

DO NOT POINT THE GUN AT ANYONE- That's the golden rule when handling a gun, be it airsoft or a live firearm

Many cons won't allow airsoft guns no matter what you do. Just a note.

I'm fairly certain the U.S has codes when it comes to selling replica guns. You can buy airsoft guys and can import them as long as they are not real and come with an orange saftey tip. As long as it follows those codes (which you can find online probably) you will be fine.

As for cons and airsoft guns...I would honestly put the orange safety tip on it and disable the trigger. If it can fire, it won't be allowed at some cons, even if the tip is on.

As long as your using a toy gun with an orange tip on the barrel it should be regulation safe. I used a NERF water gun for my prop, spraypainted black that is, but did not have the orange tip and had no issues. I also had a real gun holster with just a toy 'Western' gun inserted. Here's what that looked like;

and the large gun;

Keep in mind both guns are just from any ol' place here in the US. Walmart. Target. Toys R Us. I believe I got the big water gun at Walmart and the small 'Western' one during the same trip. The holster is from Bass Pro Shop if your curious.

You might be limiting where you think you can order from because your looking at something fully completed. That big water gun was bright neon green before I took a can of spray-paint to it and it looks completely different. You might want to get a touch creative with your props and expand your search to toy stores and the like.
