"In-Character" Posing In Pictures

So I've always ran into this problem when people ask for a picture. I've always been told to pose like the character your cosplaying would. Ok, well what if you're not sure how the character would pose? It's easy if you have someone else in the picture with you, you both can agree on a pose or work together, but when alone?

I'm cosplaying as Belarus, Gakuen Belarus, and Simca. Can anyone recommend a few good ideas for single poses?

I guess if you think about your character's personality or maybe you could try referencing the poses your characters have done in the series.
Like for Simca, shes quite a flirty girl so you could try some flirty poses (not suggesting you to do any R16+ |D ) just something playful but confident, even just simply putting one hand on your hip, shift your weight to one leg and do a cute little salute with the other hand.

but yea, I would say just practice in the mirror, as silly as it sounds it will save you from giving blank stares to photographers when they ask you to pose xD

Definitely agreeing with the practicing in the mirror part. It does seem silly at first but I got used to it pretty quickly. Read chapters of the manga that your character is in, or watch episodes that he or she is in, and get a feel for how he or she moves, stands, sits, et cetera. Then go stand in front of a mirror and try to emulate the character.

I don't really know any of those characters so I can't give specifics, but if you're able to follow that general procedure successfully, then you'll be able to figure out poses for every cosplay you ever do, rather than just those three. So. *shrug*

Oh! One more thing. Look at other cosplayers who have done those characters. Look and see what poses are awkward or don't seem to fit the character, and look also for what really works.

I hope that helps! And best of luck.

Thank you so much to both of you! I like the idea of looking at other cosplayer's poses and seeing what I would feel comfortable doing for photos. I also will try the looking in the mirror. Thank you!

She's a creepy stalker.
DO A CREEPY STALKER POSE! xD
haha... no but you know...
think of something the character would do in the anime and do a pose similar...
if your character is evil, smirk and look suspicious
if your character is adorable go ahead and do something innocent and naive...
don't repeat the same poses over and over again. Think of the poses you want to do before people ask you, that way you'll be prepared.

It sounds dumb, but I usually do research for posing. Google image them a ton! Maybe even sketch down some poses they're doing so you can practice!

Yeah if you know your characters archetype or their overall place / role in the show, then you can build off that.

Another thing you can do is to look around at the general environment or anything around you in the immediate vicinity where the picture is being taken. Objects, walls, terrain, signs/writing, etc. is there anything around you that you can use to 'make' a scene? For instance if your character is overly shy she might try to duck around a corner or hide or conceal herself behind a large object. If your character is vain she might be looking at her own reflection in a mirror or window. A clumsy character might be fumbling with something, off balance, or on the ground because they just tripped and fell on some object. If your character is boastful or self-important she might be standing front-and-center in the frame in an attempt to get the photographer's attention or block the view of someone / something else. If you are an event where other cosplayers around, see if you can find someone who might make sense as part of the scene (even if they aren't from the same show) and try to volunteer them for a few shots.

Finally even if you don't have a Russia, you can try to create the perception of a Russia being outside the frame of the photo.

Can anyone give me some ideas for poses for Sailor Moon besides her transformation and speech poses?

^ do you have a scepter or are you able to take off your tiara? can try some battle poses with those. if you can't take off your tiara you can make it look like you either are about to take it off or just caught it and stuck it back on. a funny one might be with some kind of food prop (donuts or cookies), or making googly eyes over a tuxedo mask that's just out of frame

I 2nd the google image search and mirror posing practice. I usually print out a few poses for Chun Li that I find on google images and take them to the mirror with me and practice, lol. Even though I usually end up doing the same one...or two. =>.>= At least I have them down! Haha.

Also, for the group Street Fighter cosplay my friends and I do, we make a time before the con(usually a few weekends before) to get together at one of our houses and do a test run photoshoot.

For example if I take the camera I will pretend that I am a regular con goer with a camera looking to take pics, and I'll have my friends talk amongst themselves or walk around like they would at a convention, then I randomly say "Excuse me! Can I take a picture?" and I give them about 5 seconds to get into position and *click*. XD

Its pretty fun, hahaha. Even if they dont think up a pose in time I take a picture anyways, because you never know if a con goer will be in a rush or not paying attention and take a photo really fast and be on their way. XS So then afterwards we upload them to the computer and learn from our mistakes and find which poses photograph the best. Sounds silly, but it works!

Could I have some ideas/tips for posing in my soon-to-be-completed Faye Valentine (Casino) costume?

If anyone also has posing ideas for Jet and Spike, that would be great.

What I usually do is do a pose from concept art, DVD/game box art, and if there isn't one of those I just go with something that fits the character.

For example, me and my boyfriend kind of based the pose we used for pictures when we did Haruhi and Kyon off of the first DVD box art. And when all else fails, you can just do the generic Sailor Moon-esque pose (if it's in character, of course.) :P

Totally second the practicing in the mirror motion. I've heard it helps a lot, though I've never did it myself and regretted it.

That's some really good advice! I'll have to try that!

I do TONS of research on the character and study their key poses and movement very closely. Usually one I have a costume complete, I play the game, watch the anime, etc again and keep my eyes glued to that particular character. When I cosplayed as Selphie from FF8, I spent hours getting into random battles and watching how she posed during certain moves. Then I practised them in the mirror over and over until the poses looked good and felt comfortable.
