Maybe not so much a habit in the sense you mean, but an attitude I can't shake... When I started cosplaying, I was sewing on a machine older than me, which was literally falling apart, and I had to hold it together with one hand while guiding the fabric with the other. Threading it was a good way to make parts of it fall off and/or the thread get stuck somewhere inside the machine as something slipped apart that shouldn't slip apart, and therefore every time I had to unthread the machine to wind the bobbin and then try to get the bobbin in there properly and rethread the machine so I could start sewing again, it was a complete nightmare.
Now a few years back I bought a machine of my own. It's easy to thread. I have no problem with winding or inserting the bobbin, and I have the use of both my hands. But still, after all this time, EVERY TIME I HAVE TO CHANGE THREADS, WIND THE BOBBIN, OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT INVOLVES THREADING, I get discouraged and wind up either tempted to or ACTUALLY giving up on sewing for the day. :P

I usually sit on a foot when I'm working, but that's not sewing specific.

I talk to my serger, generally in threatening tones (because she's as tempermental as a race horse), and sometimes to my sewing machine, if it starts to act up (which isn't often. I also tend to end up half naked by the end of a night of sewing, like many of you. It just happens, lol.

I don't know if you would consider this a weird habit, but I lose track of time. I'll start at around 9:00 am, and when I look at the clock it's suddenly 5:00 pm. Time just flies by.

Another barefoot/sock-footed sewer here- If I go to school for fashion design, I don't know how I'll get along if they forbid me to do that- I just find I don't have such good control with shoes on.

I have to sew barefoot; I can't really feel the machine as clearly with sneakers or some other type of shoes on. I haven't sewn nude or semi nude, but I also can't wear loose articles of clothing, as they get in the way.

Half the time I end up sewing trouser-less. Or remove whatever piece of clothing I'm sewing for, so I can fit and repeatedly try on my WIP.

1. Have to sew barefoot or with a sock on my right foot.
2. Listen to Blind Guardian. 3. Sew better when drinking (I have shaky hands).

I always have to have the show MASH playing, if not it feels too quiet and I can't concentrate. And yes, only MASH works. I just found out, however, that I can do other crafty things without MASH just fine. But anything with fabric, even drafting a pattern, just doesn't work without it.
I also can't sew with shoes on. I thought everyone couldn't... |

My sewing machine is actually on a low table in my room, (as in, it only comes up to my shins) so I'm always sitting when I use my machine. That means that I always use my hands to press down the pedal instead of my feet.
And I also do the whole 'sit there half naked thing' because I'm usually sewing a piece, I'll try it on, pin a few more things, then sew it again. So it gets really tiring if I have to keep putting my pants or shirt back on or off.

Yeah, I'm hoping the same here. I'm hoping to go back to college the school year after next and get into a fashion program, so I hope they'll not have 'YOU MUST WEAR SHOES" rules when using the machines. Otherwise I'll just start wearing my ballet slippers everywhere XD (close enough to sock feet, and they ARE shoes...).

I also sew barefoot because I like being able to feel the grip on the pedal, for me it gives me better control.
I also talk to the machine as well if it's messing up or if I'm coaxing a fabric through. I own this machine ![]() And I do a weird thing where if I'm trying to sew a straight line or making sure I get a trim on correctly I'll bend my head down as close as I can to the fabric and I end up resting my forehead on the area above the needle.

I'm terrified of sewing machines so when I do have to use one I treat it like a life or death mission, haha. I have to have everything lined up and ready to go and music loud enough that the machine isn't the loudest thing in the room, then I go in, get it done, and run.
I'm better about it than I used to be but I still don't like them. :P

I did my own stitch work by hand for my Dr. Stein's shirt, MTAC 2011. I redid the shirt for 2012. Both times I pricked my left hand at least twice, and I did half of the work shirtless from trying it on. I would sit on my knees with my shirt in progress laying on my bed.
