It's also a good idea to check animecons.com to see which conventions are near you, then to have a look around the convention subforum here to see which other users are going from your area. Best of luck finding a group and getting started!

Well, when looking at cons to attend, travel budget is a big factor. I'd suggest looking for things that are geographically close?
