Nope. For my first cosplay, the only thing I had to buy was the wig. I was Winry from FMA in her travel gear. I had a black skirt, white tank top, army boots and socks that already worked. I borrowed one of my sister's jackets and it was completed. (And, yes, I do realize how lucky this is, cuz I didn't realize at first that I really didn't need to buy anything. So this was amazing luck for me. ^_^)

Oh definitely.

I had a bodysuit as a base with lots of small details (it was a jester-like costume), and I had to create a crazy hat as well.

Though I really think that the resin casting for the giant jewel on that one was what drove the price up.

M first cosplay was about 55 dollars, but I styled my own hair and my mom didn't let me use colored contacts (althought the characters hair and eyes looked similar to mine). Besides, everything was cheaper back then, and wigs and contacts add up a lot even if you find the cheapest you can with decent quality.

My first made cosplay cost me about £25-30 for materials, maybe round that up to 50 with the bought wings and stuff. (na'vi from zelda :P) But nowadays when I make spreadsheets to calculate my total material costs it ranges from about £100-300. LOTR Elven gowns are expensive to make D:

It depends who you cosplay, and how well you want it to work out. If you want to be a crazy character, it's obvious it's going to be expensive. But if you want to be...like L, it's going to cost very little.

Cosplays: Brock (Pokemon) 95%, L (Death Note) 100%, Kurapica (Hunter X Hunter) 100%, Bikky (FAKE) 40%, Count D (Pet Shop Of Horrors) 70% Dave Strider (Homestuck) 95%
New York Comic Con 2012:
Friday: Sober! Gamzee Makara (Homestuck) 80%
Saturday: Mituna Captor (Homestuck) 80%
Sunday: Mituna Captor (Homestuck) 80%

My first cosplay (Sword Dude V1) costed me about 10$ since all I needed was a toy sword.
But that's a rare one.
Most of my new costumes can go to into the $100's or higher.
"Let's put a cookie on a plate and see what happens to the poor bastard who tries to steal it!"
-Sword Dude to Kari during a pointless argument

Meryl: So, there's something you like?
Solid Snake: Yeah, you've got a great butt!
Meryl: Oh, I see! First it's my eyes, now it's my butt! What's next?
Solid Snake: On the battlefield, you never think about what's next...

all my costume's are expensive sadly even with coupons but I'm kind of obsessed with use high quality materials get everything accurate. I spend a lot less then most happen to on my intricate costume's but at the same time I do not spend little but anyways, yes my first costume was expensive I think I spent like 300 when I could have easily spent 150 I just lacked the knowledge and I messed up a few times which ended up making me have to buy more materials and pleather isn't cheap.

I think my first cosplay was 'Yomiko Readman' from Read or Die the Anime. It most mostly stuff I already had and I think I just bought like a vest or something for $30 SGD so nah, it was super cheap. It didn't look very great either XD

My first cosplay was definitely my most expensive. I cosplay as Len Kagamine from Romeo&Cinderella. Cost me about 110$-120$. Plus the wig which was 30-40$.

Mine was super cheap.
I think we spent $20 all up on the two costumes and made them over night.. They were horrible but hey, we didn't really care.

Not, but at the time is seemed like it. To 14-year-old me, paying $35 for a pair of boots was a bit much.

Considering how expensive Snow is turning out... D:

My first cosplay was $60 so it was not too expensive.
