That depends on what you mean by first cosplay..You mean the first bought one or the first worn one?
They are different..The first one I bought was my old Sora one and it was pretty cheap online..About $120..But the first one I WORE was my Advent Children Cloud Strife which cost me over $600

No. When I first started to cosplay I relied a lot on purchasing items and them modifying them to what I needed them to be. My first costume was Ann from Shaman King and I bought the dress at a thrift store, the sandals from walmart and the beads from the dollar store. Probably didnt cost more then $30.

Depends. My first cosplay was a homemade predator that wasn't too bad until I went to DragonCon for the first time and since then I have improved the quality. I've gone through 4 revisions and I don't want to think of how much I've spent total since then.

For this first costume I'm making the fabrics were more expensive than every other I've ever bough, let's say that I paid like $10.40 just for two meters from one color and one meter from the another. It was a more sofisticated fabric than I needed, but I didn't have another choice since they were the only ones with the colors I was looking for, after searching by lots of fabric stores. And I still need to look for the accesories and wig.

My first cosplay was probably in total around $500.
I remade some parts though (well it was my first and messed up a lot >o<) and I did have large wings. But even if it is a costume that doesn't have much detail I usually end up spending about $200 a costume, for example, last year I made Yui from K-ON. The fabric alone costed about $150. Fabric isn't cheap, and everything adds up, especially when you need to buy shoes and a wig.

My first cosplay was soooo cheap. All clothes were from second hand shops and I didn't have a wig. I began to spend more money for cosplaying later.

My very first cosplay was Vanille...
Everything was hand made, the beading took a good 6 hours alone. So, I guess it wasn't necessarily expensive; but extremely time consuming and stressful. Needless to say, I wore it for about 4 hours at my first con, haven't worn it since. -.-

Not knowing what to expect from cons at first, I made sure my very first cosplay (Albert Wesker) was well cheap (Less then $10), as I already had most of everything he wore. In the long run it was completely 'worth' it (More like a truly unforgettable experience I should say) and has shown me you don't have to spend big to make it big. [Try to make full use of what you have along maintaining a wise budget] Starting off with an easy/simple character makes all the difference as well from personal experience.

EDIT: This cosplayer is a perfect example of what I stated, and also one of my biggest influences-

Yeah, cosplays are generally expensive, like everyone else has said. MY first one i got was Millhiore from Dog Days, and in total for styling the wigs and getting the add-ons, it went close to $500. That's not speaking for all costumes. More fabric, more money. If you're not a fan of spending a lot, find a character you like that doesnt have thick or layered clothing.

My first cosplay was about $25 dollars I was hello kitty. I've been cosplaying for years and haven't ever spent over $100 dollars on a single cosplay. Although I have always been very crafty when it comes to sewing so that could be why. A lot of people spend WAYYY more, but I don't see the point in spending that much on a cosplay when the money could be put to better use (i.e. college funds). If had the money though I wouldn't mind spending that much because cosplay makes me happy. So it just depends if you have that sort of money to spend and if cosplay is what you love to do

I.. Struggle to do things in half measures. My first costume sat at around $70 to make, but that was exactly it, I made every part of my costume. These days I don't baulk at the thought that a costume might cost anywhere up to $3,000.

Though, costuming for me is far more than cosplay.
