Dalek cosplay help please

I've constructed a Dalek dress, but I am unsure as to how I should make the gunstick. I thought about using craft pipe cleaners, since I don't want anything too heavy; however, they are too flimsy and I am out of ideas. Has anyone here cosplayed as a Dalek and used a gunstick?

Info: I would like to be holding the gunstick. Also, this cosplay is for Dragon*Con 2012.

Thank you in advance.

How exactly do you want this to look? You can play around with thick wire from the craft store but it all depends on what you're going for.

I want it to be as realistic as I can get it to be, and I want the metal-like look, but I don't want to spend more money than I have to. That thick wire may do the trick if it isn't expensive.
