I guess the title says it all - Why are you named what you are named? Parents wanted something unique or symbolically meaningful? Funny tale behind how you got named the day you were born? Named after a celebrity, another family member or pet? Or was just something that was randomely selected?




And as an extra bonus if possible, what names were you almost called?

When I asked my parents a while ago, the said that they just liked it (plus there were a few historical figures with it they liked: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_(name)#People).

If I was a girl, I'd apparently have been called "Natasha".

I was named after my father. He was named after an uncle who was named after his father as he was named after HIS father.. and.. etc. It is a family name basically is what I could have said there.


My mom really wanted to call me Michael or Luke. Dad won in the end.

My parents originally thought I was going to be a boy, so they were fighting between the names Dean and David Jr. I ended up being a girl. My dad liked the name Katherine, but my mom realized that everyone she knew named Katherine was fat, so she named me Katelyn instead. >.>

My first name's Jessica... I got it because despite it being a common name,nobody else in the family had it, so they wanted it a bit more unique. They also liked the meaning.
If I were a boy, I would have been called Daniel or Pau.l
And I got my middle name (Ann) from a family friend who was the sweetest lady ever.

I'm named after my aunt, Toni. My dad's sister died in childhood but I don't remember the cause. My mom told me about when deciding names she said "How about we name her after your mom?" His mother died when he was in his 20's and her name was Fanny. His response was "I don't think my mom would like that." She hated her name for obvious reasons.

As a kid I really hated my name because I get so much crap because it's a "boy's name." When it's spelled with an "i" it's a girl's name. After middle school that died down but to this day, I get really pissed when people spell my name with a "y."

My name is Shelby and the middle is Alison. My dad wanted Shelby because of the car and my mother liked it because of the movie "Steel Magnolia's" (now people tell me to drink my juice often....but I digress) my mom really wanted my first name to be Alison, because her favorite musician is Elvis Costello and she likes the song Alison. So they flipped a coin and my dad won and my mothers name was put as my middle name. So, Shelby Alison. I think it rolls off the tongue better than Alison Shelby.

So now most people ask me if it's "Shelby like the car", I just go....yea, pretty much.
