Eyelets, Grommets and Vents?

I'm wondering a few things here:

- Is there is a tool out there that can place vent/water holes? The one with a grate in them? Like the ones on the near the bottom of some combat boots (think Vietnam Era M1 Jungle Boots)

- Is there is some super tool out there that covers all the different types of grommets and eyelets, maybe even the vents I mentioned? I'm imaging a set of pliers or a stamping machine that has different tips for the different grommets. Opposed to a pair that only works with a specific style.

I'm sure these things exist, I'm just at a loss for the proper terminology. Thanks!

well for tiny (1/8") and standard (1/4") eyelets, nothing beats the Crop-O-Dile found in the scrap book section of any craft store. It has leveraged punching motion, so it doesn't tire you out with lots of use. It punches holes and sets the eyelets in darn near any material: paper, chip board, leather, plastic, thin wood, fabric, even thin metal sheets like copper & brass. I have the Big Bite version with a 6" deep reach, it ROCKS! Yes, it costs a bit (about $40 US), but so worth it if you do a lot of eyelets and/ or hole punching. I've made a dozen corsets with mine and it's still going strong.

I've seen a foot pedal operated machine that does the same thing but for large grommets (in the 3/4" to 1 1/2" range), but it was a commercial thing at a flag company. I've never seen anything for home use that was anything other that the mallet & punch set available at hardware stores.

I see, know anything that can install the grommets with vents/grates in them?

Not specifically no. Interestingly enough, I plopped down to watch How It's Made with my kids after posting that and they were making tennis shoes that had the same vented grommets you were asking about. The vented grommets were already assembled before they put them in the shoes. Thus, I assume the grommets are made that way to order for the companies, it's not a set up likely to be found retail.
