Question A bunch of Legend of Zelda "Link" Cosplay Questions

Title could somewhat explain it all, but it just doesn't do it justice.
Anyways, my friend (who will be doing Black Butler) told me about Shuto Con this year. I've always wanted to go to an Anime convention, no matter how small.
So, I decided on Link from the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and my friend Tatiana will be with me as well.
And once after thinking hard, a lot of swear words and questions followed.
So, I'd post them in the General Construction Help.

Onto the Q's.

I have brown eyes and Link has blue. Should I save up for lenses or should I just not bother?

I keep messing up on the Hylian Shield, is there any way that I can get it close to Links?

I have Brown (and very died) hair, should I buy a wig? I don't think bleaching will work due to my hair dye and I have a quarter of my hair shaved off.

Where can I find a cheap Master Sword and Sheath that's good for swinging and stuff? I found a wooden one but it's going to be around $50 and I'm also buying a Frog Belt.

I know Link has a Bow & Arrows, and recently I've bought a wooden cross bow from a random store that looked awesome. Should I use that or not bother with it?

I'm nowhere near athletic, and I'm pretty sure I can't get under 150 lbs by April. Would I have to make-do with a Corset?

For Shuto Con, there is a Masquerade + Skits. What would be a cheap and classy look for Link? I don't think Warrior Clothes would be accepted.

I have a pair of brown-ish boots that (possibly) fit, but they don't have the flaps or all that suchness that Link's boots have, and mine are dark brown. Would gluing/sewing/etc. work or would I have to buy a different pair of boots?

I'm a bit afraid because of my weight and looks that I will be criticized and such, because I read something about the Otaku house that they don't like cosplayers with body problems...

Should I rim my eyes with a bit of brown eyeliner and use a bit of Chapstick or should I just use a skintone eyeshadow for a natural-ish look?

Lastly (I hope so), Is there anywhere I could get a pair of elf ears like Link's that are inexpensive and still easy to apply?

Yeah... let's just say I'm new to Cosplaying. Let's just say that.

Lemme see if I can help with some of these...

Eyes: I don't think you need lenses. If you can afford them, and not squeamish about contacts, I'd go with them. Generally, people won't notice/care about eye colour unless the character is famous for strange coloured eyes.

Shield: I think I have a shield tut in my stockpile of tutorials... here we are! It's for OoT Link, but easy enough to alter.

Hair: Wig. Wig is good. Wigs are almost always better than using your natural hair, as you can pre-style the wig way in advance, and come in all colours.

Sword+Sheath: I don't know anywhere to buy them (I'm sure there are places, I just don't know of them) but you could make them. I'm currently making a sword myself, using this tutorial, which so far has cost me about ten bucks. They have a sheath and bow tutorial on the site too.

Bow: If the crossbow is real, a con would kick you out in a heartbeat. Anyway, I wouldn't take the crossbow if it was fake, either. You can only hold so many props.

Weight: I think you'll be fine. (I'm assuming you're a girl, so if I'm wrong, feel free to yell at me ) I'd grab a sports bra if your not... flat.

I don't know anything about Masquerade/Skits, so you'll have to get someone else to help with that.

Boots: Look into bootcovers.

Weight II: If they criticize you, ignore them. It's just plain bullying.

Makeup: I'm no expert on makeup (in 18 years of life, I can count the times I've worn makeup on one hand. All for performances where it was mandatory.) TP Link has very ladylike eyes, though.

Ears: Aradani Costumes are famous for there high quality, cheap elf ears. For TP Link, I think these would fit. Don't forget to pick up some spirit gum. They have tutorials on how to attach them.

If you have any more questions, just ask. I'm happy to help.

I don't think contacts matter, either. As an avid Zelda fan, I'd much prefer to see a Link with the proper hair color/costume than really blue eyes. But, that's just me. If you're uncomfortable with your own weight DO NOT make a cosplay that leaves you feeling insecure. Cosplay is suppose to be confidence boosting and FUN, so if you feel unhappy doing it, it isn't worth the cost! Some very few people at cons can be nasty, but I've only ever run into pleasant people which I'd like to think make up the majority of con-goers! Cosplayers come in all sorts of sizes, so you are NOT alone!

You can always try to thrift for some brown boots and then buy a matching color fabric to make the folded-over tops. I think if you have the sword/shield, the bow is not necessary, but if you want it, go for it!

I concur that ears from Aradani are great for Zelda cosplays. I used 2 different styles for my Tetra (Wind Waker) and Zelda (Skyward Sword) and they last a long time. Since it's getting close to Halloween, I suggest going to a costume shop and buying some spirit gum (with the spirit gum remover is best!) and it's pretty cheap.

I'd like to squeeze in my own questions, if it's alright too.

I'm cosplaying as Red Link and I was wondering what color should my shield and sword be? Should it be the normal Link color or should it be red?

@HappehPills: If you're doing OoT Goron Tunic, then either Hyrulian Shield or Mirror Shield, I think would be more accurate and not detract from the aesthetic...ness. If you're doing Four Swords Red Link (I'm not sure which one you're doing) then I think a Red tint on the shield would look kinda cool. The swords colour, I wouldn't change. This is all opinion, remember. It's your cosplay, you can make him wear hot pink if you felt like it. ;D

Even in Four Swords & Ocarina of Time the sword is just silver metal. You don't have to add a tint, but if you'd like to, who's to tell ya otherwise?

And it depends on which game your going for with the shield, as Pendant points out. I personally like the Mirror Shield just because it's not done often, but if you're cosplaying from Four Swords, it's not canon (which, again, do whatevah you want).

It's a mixture between Four Swords Link and Ocarina of Time, you could say. Thank you so much for the help and the support, it means a lot! I really like the Mirror Shield with just a bit of blue shimmer in it, so I would love to go with that.

Thank you both!

as for the issue about masquerade, u usually have to make ur own costume to do it so if its ur first costume i wouldnt enter since u want to experience the con first! wait a con or two then enter

Actually, for the Masquerade, only a certain percentage has to be made/modified depending on the con. Look to what the other Hylians were (Specially Zelda) and design something for Link. He definitely won't be carrying around more than his shield and sword if he's in fancy clothes.

Regarding the corset: don't bother. A corset will give you an hourglass figure. Link is a guy. However, you can get something like a binder, which will help compress your torso to look less feminine (I'm assuming you're female?). If those are too expensive, find inexpensive camisole shape wear and supportive sports' bra. Just make sure your tunic is semi-fitted/loose and it will help conceal your shape/size. If it's a heavier fabric, that will help also (meaning not tee-shirt fabric, but medium weight/shirting fabric).

Makeup: Link is typically shown with a classic Anime cat's eye shape. You can achieve this with eyeliner or even eye shadow. Here's a good crossplay makeup tutorial featuring a cat eye. I would suggest using brown liner instead of black, as it will look less severe with a blonde wig. You can also contour parts of your face to look more like Link, using eye shadow or bronzer. And Link is usually portrayed having dark(er) eyebrows, so they shouldn't be too difficult, especially if yours are dark, too.

Regarding "classy" Link. I think you could wear a shirt with pants and suspenders. Maybe in shades of brown, beige, tan, cream, with accents of green? Or wear a green fedora with a brown ribbon? Link doesn't strike me as the three-piece-suit-with-matching-handkerchief type. He'd probably keep his sleeves rolled up, and be ready for business.
Hope this gives you some more ideas!
