Wig... or not? (Help!)

Okay, so here is the problem. My friends and I are cosplaying some of the Avengers characters and doing this whole flash mob thing (it's gonna be epic ^_^). I am going to be cosplaying as Loki. Now... I have colored my hair black for this stuff before, so color change isn't an issue, my hair can put up with that much. However! My hair grows down to about the middle of my back. Obviously, Loki's hair isn't that long (yet) I do not have the money to buy a wig for this cosplay though. (seriously by budget is about $40... most of which I spent today buying fabric and crap) I really would prefer to not cut my hair (which I am being pressured to do by some of my friends) Is there any possible way on this planet to make it look like my hair is shorter than it is or provide some sort of illusion to how long it is? Or should I just be all "what the hell" and cut it off? Cause honestly, my hair grows at the speed of light, in about two months, it would be the same length that it is now. Either way, I would prefer not to cut it, so, any suggestions? Please!!! It would be greatly appreciated :3

What I would do is seperate a thin layer on the top and cut it (if it's thin and properly cut, then you won't notice it when you're not cosplaying) and then tuck the rest of your hair into the back of your shirt, and then simply spike out your shorter layers like Loki.

Thank you very much! This is very helpful :3 My hair doesn't usually adapt to layers very well, but whatever, hair gel to the rescue. Thanks for taking the time to respond ^_^ I very much appreciate it!

I don't know the length of Loki's hair, but if you look around for "faux bob" tutorials it shows some ways to possibly shorten hair without cutting it. (:

Ah, that is rather brilliant as well, I think I'm actually gonna go try that right now, see if my hair will cooperate. Thanks very much! :3
