Advise on spiking a wig?

My wig is supposed to look spikey like Jesse's hair (pictured).
I actually feel kinda...embarresed in a way but I feel compelled to ask. The thing is, ive spiked this wig for practice over and over, and I still cant get the hang of it. It comes out spiked but it doesnt look good or spiked the way it should be. Its most likely because a) Im new to styling wigs, and b) I know even if I follow a tutorial I know it wont come out professional looking but atleast decent and ok, so I knew this even before I got my wig.Does anyone have any helpful tips or hints for spiking a wig? Not necassarily a tutorial but just something that you would do to help you when you spike a wig. Just a note, I dont have a wig head (actually looking for that) so instead I blow up a balloon and tape it to a spare mug to resemble one.
