This question has been asked a million times. Use the search function and bump one of those other threads instead of making a new one.

Threads that include topics about appearance in cosplay:

http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=303570

http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=303494

Pretty much this entire section of the forum: http://www.cosplay.com/forumdisplay.php?f=168

Dude there are only 5 pages to this section. It's not hard.

I think it is very important to look like the characters because that is how Cosplay is about to look like the characters.

Many of the members who I see on the Cosplay suggestion subforum even register in cosplay.com just to ask who they should Cosplay.

It is a very common question; so, we see threads like this over and over again.

In order to keep the forum clean it would be better to search for a thread with the topic you're interested in BEFORE starting a new one. Just a little rule of thumb we use on cos.com

I would check out the links Dizzy gave you, you'll find all the opinions you could want there.

It matters to me... but clearly I don't let that stop me from cosplaying the characters I love

I don't care if others don't look exactly like the characters they are portraying, but I know for me, cosplaying would be 10x easier if I actually looked like the characters I cosplay.
Basically, I won't think a person is a bad cosplayer just because they don't look exactly like their character, but it does add to the believability if the cosplayer shares some resemblance to the character (this is especially true with live-action characters)

Frankly, I think there's nearly 0% importance for ME to actually look like the character. Contacts, foundation, contouring, eyeliner, etc, can do WONDERS. In one of my costumes I go from me, which is a light-skinned, light-haired, light-eyed female with a relatively small nose and round face to a dark-skinned, dark-haired, dark-eyed male with a fairly large nose and a sharply-angled face, and it's all with the use of makeup/hairspray/contacts, etc. So frankly...no.

And if OP did that, somebody else would complain about him/her reviving a dead thread. I feel like there's no winning, in this scenario.

In theory, the OP wouldn't have to revive a thread; just look at it, get their question answered and go along their merry way...

For some reason, I care if I look like girls that I cosplay, but when I cosplay guys it isn't a big deal to me so long as they aren't huge guys that would be hard for me to pull off. (being a girl and kind of small for that.) I don't care what other people do. It's just easier to do the makeup and stuff if I look similar to the character to start with, and it makes me feel less embarrassed (I'm a little shy.)

When I cosplay, I find it important to look as much like the character as I possibly can.

For everyone else in the world, I don't give a flying feather how much you like the character as long as there's effort there.

....I judge myself much more harshly than others. XD

This is me xD Although I don't care AS much about actually physically looking just like the character, but more if I can look similar and recreate the general feel of the character (be cute if they're cutesy, etc.)
And of course I want to get costume and wigs just right.
I just find it that I'll be more confident and comfortable if I feel like I look like the character or look really good as them. And, of course, I always love to see others that look or act just like the characters, but I'm not gonna bash you if you don't xD
