Starting a Anime Club
My friend and I are thinking about starting a anime club at our local library, we are still throwing out ideas but were not sure how to start it up since it is a public library.
I was wondering have any of you guys ever had or attended a club that was at a library? If so was it run well? How did you run it? and what kind of things did you do to get started? We have a small town with really no anime scene. All Ideas are welcome. |

No I have not, but first and foremost you should check in with the library and make sure that you can use their space for your club. Just because it's a public library doesn't mean you are approved to have full run of the joint, and the library may not approve of some things you'd like to do with the club. It will also be important to keep your members respectful of the library rules and not be boisterous.
To start things off you might want to do some film showings, if you have them and the supply's to do so. Maybe a few popular anime films, mix in some less known ones, and grow from there. Discussion groups similar to 'book of the month' clubs may help keep a sense of origination instead of just a group of people showing up with no idea what to do. For example, say you have 6 people in the club and each person puts down a manga title for drawing on what to read for the month/day/week/whatever and whomever is the club runner (say yourself) will draw randomly to pick the title of the manga. That way you can all not only get a chance to read something new, but can be organized in what's going on in the club.

I haven't, but regarding the library: you may want to talk to the library staff, particularly the young adult librarian, if they have one. It's possible that they'd love to have more teen-friendly programs and would be willing to help out.
Also, if you want to show anime, check and make sure that you actually can. Your library may or may not have a license to show videos.

For the love of all that is sacred, make sure you get a private, closed-off room.
