Obscure Literary Costumes?
So I was wondering what the general consensus was on doing costumes from kind of obscure books? I know that people cosplay from blatantly popular books like Harry Potter and Twilight all the time, but some of my all-time favorite books are definitely less well known and I really want to cosplay some of their characters!
I plan on doing: Mary Katherine Blackwood from We Have Always Lived in the Castle Weetzie Bat from Weetzie Bat Alice from The Magicians Have you ever cosplayed from a less-than-popular book? What was the response? Where did you wear the costume to, if you wore it anywhere at all?

Well, I'm working on Dragonlance costumes right now. It's a somewhat popular series, but not too popular for costuming. Of the characters I'm doing, I've seen Kitiara done once and Ariakas not at all...So I guess it's obscure

If you love the characters, go for it! Try going to sci-fi/fantasy/literary fandom conventions; your costumes will have a better chance of being appreciated there.

I'd like to see more people cosplaying from the Wheel of Time series. Or if possible, and even more obscure, would be The Blending or Troy Game Series. There are a lot of good fantasy books that would make great costumes, or so I'd think. The problem would probably be recognition, and most people thinking it's a random fantasy or medieval costume.

I have considered doing battle uniforms or officer uniforms from Ender's Game.

I'd love to cosplay Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but I dunno how recognizable I'd be. Even with a katana and an unmentionable or ninja to kill, lol.

Oh man, that would be great! I think it would be super recognizable, especially if you splattered some blood on your face or clothes!

Really, you think so? XDD I'll have to add this to my cosplay wishlist... I bet I could wrangle one of my friends into being one of Lady Catherine's ninjas. Hmm... XDD

I would think people would recognize Elizabeth Bennet. I love that book.
I'm guilty of Juliet Butler from the Artemis Fowl book series. I wore it for a premier of the latest book, but no one recognized it, even with the jade hair ring and glittery eye shadow. I really hope they get made into an awesome set of movies! If you don't know them, they are by Eoin Colfer, and they are a young people series like Harry Potter, but smarter. I've enjoyed them from teen-hood onwards.

Wow! I'm surprised (Yet delighted) that The Wheel of Time series was mentioned. I was just going to reply in the same manner XD
I know that I wanted to cosplay from various books, like WoT or The Mask and the Sorceress. If I could, I would also cosplay as Miss Marple ^_^; or anything Agatha Christie. But so far I have cosplayed one character that was based from a book, and that was Lestat de Lioncourt. The only thing about really obscure cosplays is that you would have to be elaborate/well done enough to get really noticed in general. However, that being said, you should totally do those costumes. I personally don't know who they are, but that is the beauty of cosplays....the variety and the opportunity to learn new series ![]()

Holy crap...I seriously thought I was the only one who's ever read these books. Even my lit-nerd friends haven't! Nice to see I'm not alone! lol

One year for Halloween, I was the Rider/Mitothin from "The Dark is Rising". Well, it was moreso based on the film, but no one quite knew who I was. Even though I looked like a badass.
Same goes for the book version of Yvaine from "Stardust". I preferred the dress that was described in the book, with the giant topaz pendant. Seems I just like the types of things that are just begging to be made.

Huzzah! I liked them...never did read the Blending Enthroned. I would like to see the cosplay done, but I think even with reading the books, even I'd have a hard time recognizing the costumes if someone did it.

That would be beautiful! That was such an amazing book and I always imagined Yvaine's dresses being these really gauzy, eccentric numbers. They would be so much fun to make!
