Help With InuYasha Costume

Hello people.
I'm in the process of making an InuYasha costume for Otakon 2004, and I'm REALLY looking to make a GOOD costume that stands out really well, since I know how many people will be cosplaying InuYasha.

I bought three patterns to use. I have a pattern for an easily made pair of baggy pants that I can add elastic in the bottoms for InuYasha's pants. so I think I pretty much have that out of the way.
I have a haori pattern to make his white undershirt, but I'm having a LOT of difficulty deciding on how I'm going to do his red shirt. It has a peice of fabric that crosses across the chest, and I don't exactly know how to get that on there without a seam showing. (As you can see, I'm trying to get this as EXACT as I possibly can.) So, if there is ANYon out there who knows how I might go about doing this, I'd REALLY appreciate the help. I really would like to have the costume done by June 4th, so I'm working on his red fire-rat top first. So I would like the suggestions ASAP.

Thanks in advance!
