Advice on Making a Kirtle
I am going to be making kirtles for 3 friends of differing body types, one in THIS style http://www.bettinas-pages.de/picture...irtle_1_gr.jpg and two in THIS style http://www.revivalclothing.com/Produ...rkGrnLinen.jpg
Has anyone ever made a kirtle before? If so, do you have any advice? The websites I have looked at recomended cutting two rectangles and fitting those to the body, then adding large gores in the sides. I'm a little confused about the sleeves and gussets mentioned on this website: do you sew them together to create a sleeve, then sew them to the bodice? And how do you decide how big to make hte arm hole (or is that decided during fitting?) http://japanstuff.hubpages.com/hub/m...-wedding-dress

Making a Kirtle
![]() Hello, So from what I am looking at? You are looking at making 14th to 15th Century Kirtles. La Cotte Simple has a process on how to create these gowns. http://cottesimple.com Reconstructing History has a pattern for creating Kirtles from various time periods. www.ReconstructingHistory.com Here is a pattern from a lady far away but has a good extant thought! http://www.kostym.cz/Obrazky/6_Dobov...e/VI_06_02.gif Her site is : http://www.kostym.cz/Anglicky/III_14_04.htm http://www.alternaliv.se/histvarld/f...hp?f=21&t=7121 ![]() Cilean |

I know this thread was started back in November and all, but I would recommend avoiding Reconstructing History patterns unless you really know what you're doing. I'm an advanced seamstress myself, and I have never had any luck with their patterns.
