How long is too long?

I want to do Akihiko. This will be my first non-closet cosplay, as every other character I've done is just a plainclothes mixture with a bit of makeup. Anyways, my question is this. Chibi Pa, my first big convention, is coming around again in exactly a year. I want to debut it there, for nostalgia's sake. I need to work out, lose some weight etc. before I do this. What's a good time frame to give myself where I can see whether I should just slim down, or buff up for the P4 version?
No matter the con, no matter the experience. We are cosplayers. And we are one.

It depends a lot on your body type. Certain bodies slim down really easily or bulk up really easily, and some bodies really don't do it at all. So I would say don't worry about it too much? But if you do want to worry about it, I believe there's a section of cosplay.com dedicated to fitness, so they might be able to help you better.
