MARTA in a costume
I am planning on attending Dragon Con in 2014. Rather then a host hotel i think i will go with one that's built near a MARTA station and ride the rails back and forth.
But i also want to go costuming at least one day. So what's it like riding the subway in a costume? Will i be sticking out like a sore thumb or will it be jammed packed with cos-players no one will notice me. |

You won't be the weirdest one on the train.
You might not be the only one in costume. Remember that D*Con attendance is like 55,000 people, and many people ride MARTA from the airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to the convention. Even so, you may attract a couple of second glances and maybe a few weird looks... but you'll forget all about them by the time you get up the escalator to the middle of the convention in downtown. Still, for safety, I'd probably find a buddy or a group to travel with, though. There will likely be other D*Con attendees in your hotel that you can travel with.

True story. I frequently rely on MARTA to get me places, and there's a pretty universal understanding on the bus and on the train that you will see some crazy stuff. Atlanta hosts alot of events, so people are used to large crowds of strange people. Sporting events, concerts, Pride... Atliens don't really bat an eye any more. I'll never forget the joy I got watching huge throngs of girls OBVIOUSLY dressed for the Rihanna concert exit the Phillips Arena station recently.
Personally, I kind of love riding MARTA in costume. But then, I also usually walk about six blocks through my neighborhood to get to MARTA. My neighbors have accepted my unusual dressing habits the way MARTA has accepted the Con-goers.
