So i'm making my sister into Yui from Sword Art Online/Alfheim Online
And I was running into a little trouble with making the wings




I'd really want to stay away from using wire and tights/stockings/what evers becuase then the wings won't be as transparent as hers are.

and I was reading up on tutorials on like using cellophane and stuff and thats probably my best bet, but when i see people use it all there wings turn out crinkly and i'd prefer that my wings be smooth.

another thing im concerned about is how i'm going to make it frame for support because there clearly isnt any inner frame that is visable in the wings and i know i'm going to need one unless there is some other way to find sturdy materials that is transparentish that will be easy to make into fairy wing?

I was thinking about making this for myself as well. I think I would use sparkle organza, and follow the Firefly-path tutorial with wire and fabric.

There is a new wing tutorial on deviantArt by ~Flying-Fox (listed as Fantasy Film Wing Tutorial). This ones uses cellophane and wire.

You may be able to use wire along the top edge. I would recommend painting it to blend in with the wing material. The important thing is the harness to which the wings attach. It needs to be strong enough to support their weight.

Other than that, I'm at a loss...hopefully some of this rambling gives you ideas!

It's not even that hard to cut- a jigsaw with a fresh metal blade works is pretty easy to handle. Just go slow to avoid cracking the plastic, and if it starts to melt around the blade then get a new blade.

Thin enough plastic can also be cut with shears. I wouldn't use your best sewing shears, but still...

Just in regards to cellophane wings.. They will be crinkly if you make them lazily. To get them perfect without marks just takes time and care and dedication. I've made small wings with laminate (like what you cover books with), and they came out quite clean. You unstick and press down in small sections, and smooth it out carefully with something like the back of a spoon.

I second the acrylic sheet. It's pretty easy to use and you can buy it at Dick Blick. It's also nice and sturdy, which wire wings often are not. Just make sure that you curve the ends a bit rather than making them pointy so that your sister doesn't accidentally stab anyone. You could even use Christmas window frosting spray if you want the edges to look kind of white/frosted.

I'd strongly recommend against acrylic wings, those things can get heavy, FAST. I'd sooner recommend clear plastic with white wire frames, or even pantyhose.
