I'm going to be making the ruffles at the end of the skirt and sleeves out of eyelet lace (as long as it needs to be). For the dress itself, what kind of fabric would work? The character (Erina Pendleton from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure) is supposed to be from England in the late 1800s, but her outfit is the only one that even remotely resembles anything from that period, so being absolutely period appropriate is not my number one priority. One of my friends has made dresses like this before out of gabardine, but the dresses were for much richer characters. This one is a nurse and this is her day-to-day clothing.

What fabric do you suggest?

You could do gabardines still for that dress. But I would suggest good, sturdy cotton fabrics. I've made several Victorian-esque costumes out of cottons and had really good luck with them.

Medium weight cottons would be best if her character is a nurse. Shiny fabric, satin, silks and any amount of detailing would suggest that one would be a part of the upper class.
