Question Princess Mononoke San's hood/pelt?

There's a local convention coming up, and I decided to try my hand at making a San cosplay.
If anyone's got some experience or is just willing to help out, it'd be greatly appreciated. :)

I've got a yard of fluffy faux fur, and I'm just wondering, would I be better off keeping it all one big piece of fabric when attaching it to the mask, or should I separate the "hood" from the "cape?"
I.. don't understand how her pelt thing works at all, in the images I provided. ;v;
I can't remember exactly if her hood was or wasn't attached to the pelt she wore on her back, nor do I know if it'll be easier to keep them both attached or separate them, especially with the amount of fabric I'm limited at.
I hope this makes sense. ^^;
And if I keep it one big sheet, how should I go about attaching it at my shoulders, and to make it stay?
And if I were to separate the hood from the cape, how exactly should I cut it?

Aaaaand, one more thing.. I plan on making the mask out of paper mache and Crayola Model Magic clay. I'm getting the shape from one of those green foam half-sphere things they sell at Michael's, covering it with the paper mache. After about 4 or 5 layers, I was going to cut in the holes of the face, and with the clay, I was going to fashion the "eyes" and "mouth" parts and the line designs, and then hot glue them into place. Then paint. Does that sound like a good idea or a bad idea? Should I be going about this some other/easier way..? xD

Sorry if it's a lot, any help would be FANTASTIC, really. :D
