Gift-Giving at cons?

I've heard of people giving out little trinkets when people recognize their character/take their picture at cons. Like bracelets or Dum-Dum lolipops.

This year for Anime Boston I'm cosplaying as Gumi for Saturday and Sunday. Gumi is very friendly and I was thinking about drawing a head shot of her and 'autographing' them to give out to people who recognize her, to 'be in character'.
Autographs because she's a Vocaloid and, well, I've never heard of an Idol not giving autographs once or twice :>. I think the cards would be just a simple 3x3 and I'd buy some cute card stock or thick paper to print them out on.

What do you guys think? Is handing out trinkets annoying, or fun because it's in-character?

Personally, I think the idea is cute-- I've been given 'mail' by postal carrier characters, candy, and small trinkets from cosplayers before, and it's a lot of fun!

So long as you respect a person's personal space when doing so (and you're in accordance with con rules), I'd say go for it.

It's not for everyone but I think that's a really cute and sweet idea!

If you wanted the pictures afterwards and were handing them out to photographers, maybe you could put an e-mail or something on there for contact so they could send you the photos they'd taken?

I have cards like that with contact info, yeah. I don't usually hand them out to every photographer or cosplayer I meet, but if I strike up a conversation with one, then I will! (I also like it because my username is apparently impossible to spell and no one can read my handwriting, haha.)

I think that's a really cute idea! I've never done handouts with a cosplay, but I had a friend who would give a blue feather and a piece of candy to people she talked to when she cosplayed from Harvest Moon. ^_^

I always thought it was a cute idea, like passing out little origami shapes or trinkets that relate to your character, id probably do it if I cosplayed more specific characters, I find I have no need for little handouts because people rarely approach me about what im cosplaying from, I think you should do it, if I were to get a little gift like that from a cosplayer it would make my day

Whenever I cosplay Ukitake from Bleach I hand out lollipops to people who take contact with me at a con.. be it a hug, cosplay compliment, photo request or anything. It makes people really surprised/happy. So I say go for it if you want to!

I like that idea!
At Detour last year, there was this guy dressed as a Chef(I think he was from Tales of the Abyss, not sure though, my friend knew who he was!) And he passed out laminated recipe cards to people who knew who he was- it was fun!

At Dragon*Con last year I cosplayed Henry Killinger from the Venture Bros. I made up a batch of his "HK" skull logos in stainless steel. I handed these out, and they were a huge hit. I felt it made the cosplay a lot more fun and interactive. People really responded positively, especially fans of the character. Henry also handed out his "resume" whenever asked. I came prepared, and I think most folks got the joke.

Gifts are fun! I've gotten roses, given glow sticks, exchanged autographs... I love having little keepsakes, even if they're just to eat later on that day. It's little things like that that make conventions awesome. Bonus points for being in character, too. I wish I could do something like that for my cosplays, but I'm not very imaginative.

Now I'm really tempted to give out business cards while I'm in Yusuke saying, "Yusuke Urameshi: Spirit Detective"

I think it's adorable. ^_^ If I cosplayed any character that I could give stuff out with I would. Although I do have an idea to give out bottles of ochimizu in my Chizuru cosplay to the guys from Hakuouki but it is still only a thought.

At AnimeNext last year a Nagisa(Clannad) came up to me and gave me a starfish made out of a piece of paper, which, if you played the game/saw the anime makes perfect sense. It was WEIRD though at the same time because she just came up to me and with no explanation gave it to me.
