Light up horns

A friend and I are going to cosplay as Mashu (Mysu) and Q from "C- Control." We want to get our horns to light up, but we don't know where to start! Does anyone have tips for us?

Here's Mashu and her horns when lit up:

Do the lights animate and dance around, or would you be okay with simple illuminated horns?

For simple illumination, you could do a few things- LED's in the base or EL wire along the length are both easy options.

For the construction of horns that let enough light through to be convincing, I'm not as sure. Hopefully somebody else has input on that- maybe you could form some "milk" plastic with a heat gun?

I actually did something similar on my Twilight Sparkle cosplay! I ran a set of battery powered LEDs through my wig, and hid the switch in my dress where it was still accessible. I molded the horn itself with model magic, and made sections of hot glue around which the lights were compacted, and they did indeed show through.

It wasn't so great during the day time, but at night, it worked wonders! The glue didn't want to stick to the clay all that much either, but it worked well enough in the end.

Good luck, hope this helps! Please tell me if you figure anything more effective out too.

Thank you both! Right now, we are using Instamorph for the horns. Our theory is if we make it thin enough, the light should successfully come through. My only worry is about the green horns turning red. I'm hoping buying a bright enough light should be okay.

The horns just light up. No fancy color changes or flashes, so I'm guessing the LED's will be just fine. I'll post again with the final result so I can share what works and what doesn't!

Remember that you can mold hot glue. Make a mold out of plaster or whatever, and just squeeze the heated glue from the gun into the mold.

If you don't need to change color or animate, EL wire will work too.

You'll have to be careful about the green/red thing. As long as you don't put down something that's TOO green, some red will show through. Use as thin a layer on the surface as you can get away with..

Funny you mention InstaMorph, seeing as how I'm planning to do a test with it today and see if it's any better. Please tell us how it goes!
