It's gorgeous, but it's not Chinese. He's pretty much wearing kimono.
Even Han and Qing Dynasty Chinese clothing had more of an asymmetrical line with closures on the right shoulder or chest, though most were wrapped completely around the body. Straight overlapping robes like that are just kimono.

I would have to agree with CapsuleCorp. Most of the robes worn by the Yami no Matsuei characters seem to be more along the lines of kimono, maybe with some modified sleeves, than Chinese robes. I wish you luck tackling him. I have thought of getting back to doing some Yami no Matsuei cosplay myself since it's been years since I did Byakko.

I least I have kimono pattern to work from.
Yes the goal is to have him done in 2014 Costume Con/Anime North otherwise I will keep putting off a Shikigami cosplay. Personally love Byakko myself, but Soryuu details call to me (Even if he is a bastard to Hisoka. lol) Got re-interested as the manga is no longer on hiatus. The hardest part for me if trying to figure out in obi/handing waist panel.... http://manga.animea.net/yami-no-mats...9-page-14.html I'm just not sure what's going one there. But I'll probably make it one lace up in the back piece like I do with my other obi's. Totally agree about the Chinese/Japaneses mash-up as you can tell she was going for Chinese textile patterns.

Ooo I hope you can present it at the 2014 CostumeCon in Toronto! I would love to see it in person!
I don't know what's going on with the waist there, but it's probably safe to say it's not a historical thing either way, so making it work for you with the costume, and your needs, might be the right way to go. Best of luck!

Does this mean i get to actually meet you. ^_^
If I get it done it will be presented in the Fantasy category. The first thing I'm going to tackle for it over the summer if I get all 3 costume done for AN is Regina (apple dress) from Once Upon a Time for the Historical catagory.

Yep! I already have my ticket for CC32, just need my passport.
![]() Those are both marvelous ideas and I wish you all the luck in getting them done. The YnM character design is gorgeous, I think just starting with kimono patterns and modifying them to have the character's own particular unique features (if there are any - shaping, fitting, long trains, different-style sleeves, etc) is the way to go.
