Kirito Shoulder Armor help

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psaf73eef8.jpg
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psef47072d.jpg
For reference lol

Anyway, his one shoulder pauldron..I'm having an awful lot of trouble..More then I should be having lol

I'd like to make it out of craft foam to be easier, but I don't want there to be overlaping areas..If I do the thing where you cut out triangles and put the parts together, I can't keep it closed..But if I overlap the pieces, then there's, well, an overlap..I have tried heating it into a dome, but it won't stay..I only have the stove to work off of. It only warps in one direction, rather then in ALL directions so I'm having a lot of trouble..I don't really know how to explain it..

Anyway, I can't find any tutorials..They all include making it "close enough" then using wonderflex, but I can't afford that stuff..

Any ideas?

And no, I can't go buy anything to "try out" other then foam..I'm broke as crap right now and already wasted a crap ton of money on other ways..All of which were a bust..

EVA foam might be your friend here- it's pretty cheap, even if you buy a package of those 2x2 foot sheets. To get it into that round shape, use some hard, round surface to form it- a bowl might work, or you could make a rigid form by covering a rubber ball the right size partially in paper mache- half the ball should do the trick. Once it's dry, take the paper mache off the ball, and reinforce it by layering some more on its inside surface. You can then heat the foam to shape it- Tutorials call for using heat guns, really hot water, even putting a piece of the stuff in the oven to get it just hot enough. (Use caution here)
Once your foam is hot enough to be shaped, you can put it over your form and mold it to shape. After that, it's relatively simple to trim it to shape.

Give it a coat of plasti-dip (Or if money's an issue, several coats of watered down craft glue), and then hit it with silver spray paint.

This is just a quick and dirty rundown, just look up EVA foam armor tutorials online for more info.

Are you willing to use a pepakura?

If you design the armor there and print it out, you just need to match foam piece to paper and attach as such. Mathematically, it makes the most sense as it has a very small margin of error.

Amanita, I really like that paper mache ball idea..I never thought of that..Queston..Would it work on a foam ball doing that? I mean a rubber ball I can get for a dollar lol but I already HAVE a foam one ^_^ If not I will do that then and see (this is where being broke isn't a huge problem lol)

EDIT: So along with this foam thing..I just had a quick thought..I just realized....Maybe I'm not getting it hot enough to form correctly..When it's hot enough, should it be able to make a dome shape without any folds?

Midnight, I've never used that..I have no clue how lol also, since it has to be made into pieces, it will have all these seems I can't connect..I have to use the thin "foamies" which are almost impossible to glue the thicknesses together lol But I DO however want to learn how to use those files..I need other armor later that it will be usefull for

Well for starters you can upload the program 'blender'. It's the program I use when formulating my design plus it's free

Then the program 'pepakura designer 3' which is also free.

There is an online guide to how to use blender. But I just went to the library and checked out a copy of 'blender for dummies' which answered more or less all of my questions.

Oh dang, that helped a lot!!
So, I don't have a heat gun, nor the money to get one, so I have to use the stove,.This should still work though right? Like say I sit on a chair in front of the stove, hold it over the burner, then quickly bring it back to my knee..That would basically be the same thing right? And actually, I was planning on making it bigger then it needs to be (as in using more foam then needed) then cutting it out like you did.

Pepakura shoulder armor I made awhile ago. It was for clouds shoulder piece but its not the correct size/shape yet. (no fiberglass or anything on it to smooth it out)

Just as a possibility if you ever consider pepakura.

Millions, it's the kind os stove that has the coil burners that get hot. It's not the flame kind. Is that more what you are thinking? If not my mom's house has the kind that is totaly flat and heats up underneath the surface..If that's the kind you mean, I can just do it there..Either one I can do at any time basically.

Ichigo, that's freaking awesome. I had no idea you could do that with those files..O.O That looks way harder then I thought it did though..And is that this thread on the screen? lol That just makes me laugh for some reason

Well, that didn't work..At all..Maybe using the stove is just a terrible idea in general..I'm wasting TONS of foam doing this..Millions, since the stuff you are using is plastic, and not foam, when it cools it stays in the shape you made because unlike foam, it hardens back to the stiffness you already had..Foam is already extremely flimsy, therefore it scools and is STILL very flimsy..So I guess it's nowhere near the same..I don't have much time left before the con, this is really getting to me..

Do you have a hair dryer? It would work about the same!
Also when I use craft foam after I set the same I use glue+water+a scrap of cloth on the back to make it more rigid.
I talked to you about this before, but again my suggestions are:
Make a base out of craft foam or heavy paper really whatever you can use to get your basic shape that would hold to your shoulder (using elastic or Velcro to keep it on your clothes) then over that shape use expanding foam (this is the kind I use) to get a larger shape that won't have an cracks in it. The cover that in plasi-dip mod podge, gesso, or something of the sort. You could use Friendly Plastic or Wonderflex as well, but I understand those are super expensive. (Here is a link for a sample of wonderflex that should be big enough for this project and is pretty cheap)

Side note: I wish I lived closer to you, because then I could help you with this and you could use some of my wonderflex. /:
