I always have trouble interacting with people at cons. I go with my friends, but a lot of times they go off and abandon me (some friends, huh?). My first con was a drag. I went by myself.

However, most people at cons are very friendly. At Otakon last year, a Prussia cosplayer and I harrassed each other with 20 pounds of Mardi Gras beads, and a Santa gave me pocky. I also ran into a really nice Russia who I "saved" from attacking fangirls and then ran into again at the PA Ren Faire. Just be yourself and be nice~

I would also suggest finding out if the gatherings you want to go to have fb event pages. You'll be able to pre-meet people there.

This year will be my first cosplay and also the first time I'll have gone alone. I'm hoping to meet some nice people. I'm not a very outgoing person so I hope I don't come off as rude or creepy.

I'm going to agree, photoshoots are where I've met most of my new friends from conventions. It's easy to talk to people when you already know at least one thing you have in common.

I have this problem. I'm horrendously shy, so even though I WANT to meet people, the second someone tries to talk to me I start trying to find excuses to get away

I am very shy too, and an be when I go to conventions. But I am able to break out of my shell a bit. I just keep telling myself that everyone here is just as big of a geek as I am, and no one is going to judge me. And I do find that is does help me to break out of my shell a bit, and talk to people.

I hang around in the hug-zones my con has and it's surprisingly easy to make friends that way. I also just randomly compliment people at panels or sit by strangers (well, people who look approachable enough) during lunch and strike up a conversation. That being said, I'm pretty social when I want to be... Just, you know, don't be shy. Most congoers are cool, and those that aren't... well, I just avoid them.

I was also wondering this, I've been 2 cons so far and the only people I still know are my own friends I go with. ;_;

I think one way of making friends would join online groups in ur area and see if any of them are going to the same con as u.

I'm going to anime matsuri if anyone is going.

Lines man. Every year at Oakon I always wind up in some line somewhere, and I always talk to the people around me.

I'm also not shy, so I have no problem just striking up a quick conversation with someone if they look approachable/whatever. We are all here for the same reason, you know!

Be yourself.

For example, Anime Vegas 2012 I was dressed as Honey-senpai, and I was bored and hyped up on Con adrenaline and chocolate. So I started a CaramellDansen line in the Dealers Room. It was a hit and basically 100+ people joined in. From then on, people would literally come up to me and be like "Ohay you're the CaramellDansen Honey! I joined that line, it was awesome!" Met /so/ many people that way.

I'm new to cosplay myself, but from what I've watched, having people know the character you are helps too! Like I was Black Star from Soul Eater and people were like saying OMG ITS BLACK STAR and I'd be like WAZZUP! or HELL YEAH! Don't be afraid to talk to some people!(especially from the same series). All in all be yourself and the rest is history

Hope all goes well at your second con!

Lines, and people who recognize your cosplay. You may not keep in contact after the con, but while you're there, smile.
