Question Lightning Returns Torso Armor Help

Hello everybody!

I'm currently working on my Lightning cosplay from the upcoming game Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns, and although there is a good amount of reference material out there, I'm having some difficulty discerning exactly what on earth is going on in the neck area of her top.

Somehow, it seems to magically turn from a piece of leather armor into a regular turtleneck.

Pictures for reference:

Any opinions/insight would be welcome. Literally any. I am so lost. HALP.

hmmm... I've seen stuff with collars like that in leather/ pleather, but the sources are.... adult. O.o

Because this outfit has a cape, you can get away with having it covering that fully because you can put a big honkin' zipper up the back. Look to Kwik Sew skating/dance/ aerobics patterns for a good resource on those types of body lines.

I've done some more research and I think I've figured out how I'm going to construct everything. <3

I've sen people us mannequin forms or fencing armor for female chest armor.

You can add details to it in craft foam and hot glue ontop.

The armor front also look like it's goes to the shoulder to mount her cape and shoulder armor to as well.

Along the collar bone it attaches to a leather style collar. The upper backs is also probably "leather" in a solid form (thing Clouds turtleneck) along the shoulder blades as well.

Thank you so much! I've just bought a mannequin which I'll use to sculpt some modelling clay into shape :3

Try Wonderflex. It comes in really large sheets. It's a thin plastic with reinforcing. It melts at low temps so you can use a hair dryer or heat gun (works better) then shape it to whatever you need. Google it. Lots of theater prop & costume people use it. It's easy to paint, mold and cut(with just scissors). I've used it for armor, masks, arrows, helmets, etc.

I've actually created a steampunk Dracula collar similar to the one you want, but I wanted it to look like leather!! Cut a sheet, bent it with a heat gun. When it hardened I took some 60 grit sandpaper and roughed up the surface real good. Painting the roughed up surface with brown/black paint....It looked just like worn leather!
Good luck!

I may make the collar using Wonderflex. I've got a few questions... Could you coat the wonderflex in fabric (the same fabric I'm using for the cape)? Or make it look like fabric and just paint it the right colour? I've never used this stuff before xD

Wonderflec is platic upi can cover it int fabric so long as you cglue iy down ans seal the edged on the inside.

WonderFlex has a woven texture on one side and a slightly smoother finish.

The is also Worbla is take truer curves. round shapes then Wonderflex.
Worbla.

But what I ment is that you can buy a half form mannequin (these are cast in plastic sheets) and cut it up for your armor plate as well. I might be cheaper in the long run then building it.

Oh, ok! I only bought a half form mannequin anyway (I think it is since it was only £8), so I could cut it up and use under the clay... :P
