Trust me, I hate most yaoi fangirls. Just because I'm gay does not mean I will cosplay all your yaoi fantasies. But the fanbase doesn't make me hate the material itself, y'know?

And often by extension a lot of my gay guy friends hate yaoi as well.

And yaoi like ALL dramatic love stories, is often way over dramatized. Much like most anime and drama shows.

Because often yaoi tends to be a poor representation of gay couples and its completely formulatic and often misrepresents the gay community and some times occasionally hurts it. With the fangirls enforcing these ideals on top of it and not listening to them it can get wearisome. They're people, not characters from your animes. I actually have heard of people wanting gay kids so they can "ship them: and I was like ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME

And I knew another bitch who was like "i will pretty much force my sons to be gay" she wasn't a yaoi fan but she was this crazy bitch who loved gays to a very fucked up point, none of us liked her.

Is that not true for yuri and just heterosexual writings in general? I don't know about you, but most romance writings don't accurately represent anything and are always formulaic. Twilight, anyone?

I've read a few yaoi manga's and such that actually ended up hurting the community, yeah. Generally that's just a horrible writer., but the damage was done.


I'd like to make a very clear distinction between the fans of something and the material itself. They are different. Just because the fans of something are insane doesn't mean the material itself is bad. Yaoi fangirls are, on average, insane. But the fans=/=the material itself. Although they do try to enforce the idealistic view onto people. xP

Everything has it's extremes. Those people you pointed out are /very much/ the extreme end. xD

To be fair, the lbgtq community is far more misrepresented than heterosexual people. It is often assumed that they fit stereotypes like a gay guy must LOVE shopping because ya know... he's gay.

And maybe the fans are different from the source material but someone is WRITING that source material and misrepresenting the people they are placing the ideas in to peoples heads. I have had people ask my gay friends if they were "seme or uke" which I find pretty out of line. I have plenty of friends who like yaoi and it's fine, I don't care as long as hey don't start assuming all gay or lesbian or trans people behave the way the yaoi or yuri protrays.

So in a way YES yaoi can be damaging to the representation of them just like fifty shades of gray was damaging to the bdsm community.
