Simulating Dirt/Mud

I'm considering a future cosplay that would involve gratuitous amounts of fake blood and dirt (that "dark and gritty" look). I'm a bit grossed out by the idea of using real dirt, and I doubt hotels and convention centers would appreciate it either. I was wondering whether powdered cocoa mix would be a good substitute? Maybe it's best to do the costume without the messier effects?

Maybe Coffee grounds or something? But it would suck to smell like coffee all weekend. xD

Would dark make-up, like brown eye shadow or foundation several shades darker than my skin tone work? I'm pretty pale.

The costume in question is Lara Croft from the newest incarnation of Tomb Raider. In most of the screenshots, she's covered in mud.

There are lots of companies that make "dirt" makeup. Here are a few links you could try:

You could also maybe add a little bit of fake scratches and blood. Not too much, but one on the forehead and maybe a bigger one on your arm to look like you've been running through the jungle.

You can generally buy really small bottles of these things so it's not too expensive, and a little goes a long way. I definitely would not use cocoa powder...you'll end up all sticky haha. Hope this helps!!

Ben Nye sells fake dirt in various colors in shaker bottles and is fairly cheap if you get a small size.

I know this will sound ridiculous but....baking cocoa makes fantastic "dirt" whether it's for your clothes or skin.
