Naruto Sage and Scroll

Hey Guys!
Since I figure there will be a million Naruto cosplayers at Anime Expo, I want advice on how I can make mine as unique as possible.

Alright so, so far I have Naruto Uzumaki (Shippuden) outfit, Ninja shoes, A really nice headband built for Naruto from Shippuden, a good wig (I am going for realistic, so it is like a blondish gold), leg holsters and butt pouch, and contacts.

I was thinking of going with Sage Naruto. If I have the money to make it. Since I am tight on money, I would have to make it myself.. here is a picture:

I am a noob at sewing, and have no idea where to start. I figured I would buy all the fabric and cut myself, then have a friend sew it.. But again, I don't know what pattern to use?
Would there happen to be a pattern for the coat that is free? It is pretty simple..
Also, what fabric should I use? I am noob to picking fabrics..

And then.. there is that huge scroll.. o-o
How would I go about doing that if I am on a budget?

So what do you think could add a good touch on a Naruto cosplay for cheap.. ?

*You might be able to use a haori jacket pattern. If you do an Internet search, you might find a free tutorial somewhere.
* Choose bottom weight fabrics like twill. Make the coat with red fabric and sew the black part on top.
* Pretty sure there's a scroll tutorial on the Internet somewhere. Check here and deviantArt.

Thanks for the reply!
Again.. I am super noob at this. I actually may or may not do it.
About the scroll.. I had trouble finding a Sage scroll tutorial. It is very big, and I want it to be lightweight.

The only materials I could recommend are foam and cardboard.

If you have Google Chrome installed, it should translate to English.

If you have a friend sewing, let them do the cutting! You can ruin the costume before it even begins by cutting it wrong. Offer some other service in trade, like mowing the lawn or cleaning the kitchen, whatever.

The only problem with that is that I like to contribute.. Or else I feel dirty.. Like I didn't do anything. xD
I guess I could cut it in front of her? She may be able to make sure I do it right.

In regards to the scroll, you could either go with foam and paper mache over it or get sheets of cardboard and roll up to get the shape for the scroll and again paper mache over it.

Since both these items are already steady enough, I would only use about 5 layers of mache. That way it remains light.

(Yeah, I'm a fan of paper mache when it comes to props)
