sexual Harassment in cosplay: This has to STOP!

Sexual harassment is becoming a majorly huge issue in the cosplay community. This needs to stop. Now! It doesn't matter what country your in, who you have cosplayed before, or how many pictures you have had taken, at some point you have heard it or been verbally hit by it or even physically had it happen. you may have laughed it off, ignored it or what ever but its not right and if we keep doing these kinds of actions its just going to get worse. We need to raise awareness and protect our selves and each other from these creeps.

Spread the love not the creep! http://www.16bitsirens.com/consent/

Cosplaying use to be the one thing i can feel confident, sexy and my self in and now the assholes are invading that to!!
I have to admit, Im not perfect. there is 1 photo of my self (not in cosplay) where Im not best posed with a master chief. now I find him very attractive and I acted on a whim. I never posted anywhere that picture when i got home from that con, and I never will. Im embarrassed I did that my self! I cant even imagine what the guy in the suit must have felt!

Cosplay =/= consent. plain and simple.

I remember some guys joking-poking fun at me at Otakon 2011 for crossplaying, talking about having sex in another room and such. >.>...... That's the only time I had any sexual harassment of any sorts myself. Still not cool.

Update: August 10th.... still nothing.

Reality: Recycled or no cosplay at all. Got to love commissioning! Thanks everyone!! Serious thanks to Dulcinea, who actually made the deadline for the accessories far in advance and of outstanding quality. Sucks they won't be used.

Like others have said before, I don't know what holding up a sign is going to do. I remember someone on here raised the idea of law enforcement holding signs like that rather than just cosplayers. It would probably be a lot more effective.

I mean, guys who would harass a girl aren't going to go, "wow, so she doesn't want me fondling her, guess I'll stop." They're going to think, "so what?" and go on doing what they're doing. If they're made more aware of negative legal consequences, that would probably decrease the behavior.

Read just about any behavior modification book and you'll see this is the case.

What I also think is important is for people, not just cosplayers in general, to report any inappropriate behavior. A lot of people just let it happen to themselves. We should be encouraging them to report it when it does happen.

Raising awareness is a good start. It can help build up support networks so people don't have to face it alone.

http://singlevoice.net/redyellow-card-project/

This right here is just one way to actually act. It's a fantastic idea that even the most shy cosplayer can implement. But these shouldn't serve as a replacement for Con security. Like Oni said, we need to encourage people to report these if not for yourself then for the next person that gets harassed.

I was cosplaying Panty from Panty & Stocking, & I had my Stocking there with me. She had one stocking on and her sword, and I had backlace. This photographer goes, "So I see Stocking doesn't have one of her stocking's on and she has her sword out.. so that must mean.."

He was obviously referring to the insinuation that I had no panties on, since if you're not familiar with the show, Panty's lingerie transforms into a pistol. I mean, it was a funny joke, but really, did it have to be said out loud? I mean, I might be overreacting, but I don't want that put out there in public (even though I was in fact wearing undergarments)

I don't think that is necessarily sexual harassment, but it's a little rude. Eh, maybe I'm just overreacting.

Because of all this uproar over sexual harassment, a lot of guys are going the other way. Like little kids told to eat their vegetables, they're throwing hissy fits about how it's stupid that people are complaining over this, women should be able to stand up for themselves, they have the right to do this because they have superior status, that it doesn't happen at all and women are being attention whores, etc.

I've never been on the giving or receiving end of this kind of attention, so I really have no idea of the frequency, how to respond if myself or someone else is a victim to it, things like that.

Goes both ways.

I can not even count how many times I had my a$$ grabbed while taking pics with a woman while dressed as Vader. I have also had invites for further (shall we say) adult pursuits. I usually ignore the gropes and turn down the invites.

I'm convincing enough as a man that this doesn't really happen to me, although there have been dudes who have tried to start shit with me, thinking I'm a guy.

Yes, if you go to the website you will notice that there are also male cosplayers included.

Just got back from a con contest, where the contest mc was basically making innuendo jokes every chance he got, btw this was part of the upcoming syfy "cos world" series so maybe you'll get to see it. Personally i find it a little bit of a lazy time filler, but if a cosplayer strikes a suggestive pose, then they really shouldn't be offended, even if the innuendos get tirsome.

Btw talking about the flipside of having to deal wth potentially unwanted advances, at the same contest a rather attractive logan from x men was basically propositioned by one of the female judges onstage. But the stereotype says guys should like it, and he quite possibly did based on his back stage demeanor.

Just food for thought.

Even if a cosplayer is doing a suggestive pose or wearing a "skimpy" or not very modest outfit, I don't think that's a good basis or reason to make a brash, unwanted sexual comment.

I'm sorry but I can't understand a WORD you said there.
Frankly, (and i hope i'm getting the gist right) yes, there ARE cosplayers, GOOD ONEs, who explore the fetishy side of cosplay. Such as the great folks over at cosplay burlesque. And without naming any of their names (I know one from even before they were performers) many of them have been on the receiving end of this harassment. And as far as I'm concerned, just because they put on a show for everyone to enjoy, DOES NOT give people the right to try to grope/proposition/touch ANY OF THEM before/during/after the show.

This has as much to do with general attitudes towards women as it does cosplay. Women are told we shouldn't make a big deal of this shit. That we don't have the RIGHT to show off our bodies, because if we do, it's OUR FAULT if we get sexually assaulted. That men arn't responsible for following their natural urges in that situation. And that perception NEEDS to change.

Also, this inappropriate touching DOES happen to men. Not as often, but it does. So ladies who go a little to far with flirting at cons, try to remember "do unto others as you would have done to you."
HANDS OFF.

This is a society-wide problem, not just a "cosplay" one.

Talking about how "tarts" bring everyone else down IS the problem - because it shouldn't matter if someone looks like a "tart" or not. Being dressed "like a tart" is still not consent. Having a crappy cosplay is still not consent.

And it's not like this has anything to do with how "sexy" the costume is - because people just use that as an excuse to justify and to shoot people down so they don't have to care. Clearly Darth Vader is not a super-exposed costume. This happens to Disney Princesses and other "wholesome" characters.

I don't know how I feel about this effort. Yes, it's nice, but it's like putting a bandaid on a broken bone so I have to feel a little weird about it.

I understand this sentiment, and even agree with it some, but society isn't capable of sweeping change instantly. Change that doesn't revert back to status quo requires baby steps. Raising awareness of how many people frown upon this is the first step. Then perhaps shaming people for doing this, and sticking up for each other. Then FORCING the police/con/whoever to enforce the laws. But you can't do that without a base of support and awareness.

Sexual harassment in cosplay does bother me a lot. Somethings, like making jokes about butts when I was cosplaying AKane from Vividred are fine as butts are half off the show but having people try and throw things into your cleavage when you're wearing a low cut costume are not. It's not just men, women do these things too.

If I'm cosplaying from a series that does make light of things of a sexual nature (eg- Vividred or I'm cosplaying Mariandale later in the year and will be fine talking about genitals related to the character as long as it doesn't turn into a discussion of my own) and a person who obviously knows the series isn't being a total creep then it's fine but comments of a blatant sexual nature meant to cause irritation, discomfort or are just plain attempts at hitting on you for the wrong reasons just need to stop.
