Looks wise they don't look bad, maybe a little flat but I would like to re-do them with embroidered ones in the future.

Is there any consensus on what material the uniform jacket is actually made from?

Personally I prefer a twill jacket rather than vinyl.

It's still pretty split. I've seen arguments from both side regarding leather (or vinyl for cosplayers) vs cotton based on waste of resources and crop space in universe. The official merch jackets are made of a heavy cotton fabric.
I personally prefer them not made from vinyl as I'm of the opinion that leather would be a more valued resource and when you're sending people to get killed, it's not something you want to waste like that. The jackets also appear to have more movement than leather would have when blown by the wind. I made mine from drill.

Yeah, I was thinking twill, as well. Good to know most people seem to be on the same page. (Less expensive than leather and easier to work with...)

Is it okay if I use leather for the straps? The straps are the most important thing right i mean straps

I wouldn't imagine them being made from anything but leather. The boots too (I used vinyl for both). Those things take some pretty hefty beatings in series and the straps need to be mega-strong for what they're doing with them.
It's just the jackets that I've seen any argument/serious discussion over materials on.

Trying to figure out the purpose of the brown skirt thing and also how the gear actually attaches. i thought it was part of the belt, but when Armin drops his gear (twice...) it comes off as three separate sections (fan, Lsheath and R sheath), even though both times he only undid a single latch. And even then with the manga's art style it's hard to tell exactly what the latch looks like.
Any ideas?

I decided to go with duck cloth. It is a plain but strong woven cotton fabric commonly used for work clothes. And because it is heavy, durable, and tear resistant, I think it is also a good choice for battle clothing...

Thank you! I'm so jealous of people with embroidery machines- this is a life saver.
