Darkening Eyebrows

Okay, so I saw a lot of threads about lightening or covering eyebrows, but what about darkening them?

I am cosplaying Inara from Firefly, who has very dark hair and very dark eyebrows:

My hair is naturally blonde, so I have light brown eyebrows. This looks totally bizarre when I have my Inara wig on, haha.

So, any make-up techniques/products that you would recommend for darkening eyebrows for a natural look?

Eyebrow powder/pencil, eyeshadow, facepaint... a lot of the same techniques used in lightening your brows can be applied to darkening them.

You can use a dark creamy pencil from like Nyx to cover up and slick back your brows, then set it with powder.

I swear by eyebrow polish rather than pencils. I find pencils make my brows look drawn-on. It's probably because my brows are sparse as well as pale, so the pencil ends up on the skin rather than on the hair. I wear this... pretty much whenever I go out of the house, even if I'm not otherwise wearing much makeup.

Brow polish is essentially mascara for your eyebrows. It goes on the same way, with a little bristly cylindrical brush in a tube. You brush it on very gently so that it gets on the hair but not on the skin, and it makes your brows look darker and fuller. The brand I use right now is Anastasia, but I know there are some less expensive ones. In a pinch I've actually used brown eyelash mascara on my eyebrows and had a decent result; although in general mascara is thicker and brow polish is a bit more liquid.

Awesome, thank you! I have a similar problem when trying to use pencils, it just never looks right...

I will look up the brow polish. Thanks!

You're welcome. I think it's still enough of a new thing that you might need to go to a specialty store for it; I don't think any drugstore brands carry it. Sephora will have a couple of different brands and you'll probably pay $20 for a tube.

Yeah, I was glancing at the Sephora site and saw them! I am going to CVS after work, so I'm going to look there just in case, otherwise I'll head down the block to Sephora later this week. $20 isn't bad. I don't mind paying more for something that's higher quality. My Clinique collection will testify to that, ha!

I have bleached eyebrows. When I draw on eyebrows for a costume I use pencils in multiple colours and use small hair-like marks instead of drawing them on in one big shape.

Brow polish is good if you have eyebrows that are the shape you want, but pencils will let you change that a little. The reason I bleach my eyebrows is because I hate their natural shape and it gives them a lower and fuller look in "normal" situations and I can draw on any eyebrows I want for costumes without having to work completely with their natural shape.

If you're careful with drawing them on and treat it like a painting it will look fine. I have pictures from a few years back where I can't even tell if the eyebrows were "real" or drawn on.

I have pretty full/thick eyebrows that I shape myself, so I don't have any problem with fullness, which may be why pencil, even small strokes, can look unnatural on me.

Thank you for your help! That's good to know for shaping your own.

Agree, I always use more then one colour with darker shades and draw on lines rather then fill them in to mimic hair strokes.

My eyebrows are still blonde despite my hair being dark auburn. lol
