Hi there!

I was hoping some of you might have some ideas as how to approach this problem I've ran into! : )

I'm cosplaying as Daenerys for Comic Con. I want to do her blue dress she wears in Astapor (Season 3 GoT). Here's a quick reference: Reference 1

I'm fine with patterns, but the top portion of the dress has left me stumped:

Reference 2
Reference 3

The top portion looks as if it's scaled, and I'm not sure at how to achieve this effect. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance for your advice

Here's a better pic: Reference 4

It's a wrap dress! google to find vintage patterns for them, they were very popular in the late 70's and early 80's. As to texture, that is in the fabric itself, it looks like a nubbly raw silk.

I think its to fitted to be an actual wrap dress. The bust looks fully sewn, and it has princess seams worked in.

As for the texture on the top, I could see it being embroidered in gray. It could also be shredded cotton netting, dyed gray, and sewn onto the top.

I like the design though, very pretty, even with a keyhole in the back http://fashionista.com/uploads/2013/04/dany.jpg

My best guess for the texture on the top is that there's embroidery is a less saturated colour for one part.

For the part that looks like "scales", I'm squinting at it really hard and my best guess is either something like smocking or trapunto.

If you don't mind me asking, what pattern are you using? I want to make that dress, but I am very concerned about what pattern would be best.

if it helps at all I think I found an almost exact match for that fabric!
JB silks raw silk suiting pattern h-300, color 18
The site won't let me link directly to the swatch but it is on this page: http://www.jbsilks.com/hand-woven.html, row 18, the swatch on the far right. I'm ordering a sample, so we'll see if it looks the same IRL. Looks identical to me!
only problem is they don't have any prices up... and it's silk which means $$$.
Looks like such a nice fabric though.

Wow, thank you guys so much for your awesome advice! I'm going to try out your guys' ideas for the bodice's scales and just see what looks best.

RogueKhaleesi, I'm actually making my own pattern for this dress, but I would love to share it with you once I've finished it : )

I've wondered if that one with the harness is a different dress - there is embroidery that wasn't there before on it, down the front.

That always a possiblity as even on Once Upon a Time there is two identical outfits but the details had changed. Red's cape is suppose to be unique but there was 3 red capes for her. lol

I used Simplicity Pattern 1994 for the below; I'm not much of a seamstress so someone with skill will probably get better results than this:

Going to add Arrow smocking to the top soon. (thanks for tutorial link, Kelley!)

fabric

What fabric do you think was used for the dress?

The fabrics for this show are tricky since they are known to weave fabric themselves - something that is probably more likely for a focal character like Daenerys (as opposed to one-timers or background people).

Hi-res picture.

The cloak is very silk, but I can't really say if the dress and cloak are the exact same fabric. No matter what picture it is, it always looks like a bit different color and character - be it from different dye bath or different fabric or different distressing. The dress also looks less "silk-like" to me and more wool-like.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a wool-silk blend. The designer talked about her clothes this season being her creating her own style and bringing together her past with the Dothraki way of life - wool and silk would definitely be that. Or it could be just a less fine weave or who knows what.

Raw silk, pictured here, will give a similar enough look, I think. It's not shiny (make sure you're not getting something that's been finished or treated) and has that "striped" character - here's a dress made with raw silk, you'll find a LOT that has been treated to be shiny, but it doesn't have to be. I don't think that's what hers is exactly, but it would be pretty close without weaving something yourself. Dupioni is likely going to be too shiny and hers, while varied in colour doesn't really have any significantly raised elements. A wool would also work, especially if it had those variations in colour.

Honestly, you can use whatever you want as long as it "reads" right because this is a case where you're not going to get the exact same fabric.

This dress is very similar and appears to be more silk-like, in the way it's sort of puckering in itself. See this dress for example.
