Cheap makeup -- how to make it stay on?

A couple years back when I was first getting into cosplay, I bought this super-cheap body paint palette from a drugstore around Halloween. So I assume that says itself that the quality of the makeup is really low.

The black is actually a thinly-veiled grey, the grey is actually greasy and silver, the white is a complete joke and smells terrible, but the blue and the red are actually VERY pigmented and cover very well.

But my issue rolls back around to the "it's really cheap." I used the red on my face the other day, and tried to seal it the standard way (makeup sealant + setting powder), but even then, it came off, a lot.

Theoretically, I should stop being cheap and just go buy some Ben Nye makeup or something, but do you guys think there's any way I can save this cheap stuff?

Ben Nye isn't expensive! It's actually pretty reasonable in price and so is Mehron. I forgot which one it is but Disney uses one for their makeup so you know it's high quality. I also hear Mehron's setting spray is good for keeping costume makeup in place, so maybe picking up a bottle of that will help as well.

Oh, I know it's not expensive -- I use both Mehron and Ben Nye body paint, plus Ben Nye setting spray and Mehron powder, so it's not a price thing, but rather a "I wonder if this cheap stuff can be saved!"

Halloween paint from a drugstore? Probably not... most drugstore halloween make up kits use mineral/petroleum oil in their ingredients, which keeps the paint smushy to a degree no matter what.

Other brands of face/body paint (Wolfe/DFX/Tag/Cameleon) have a paraffin wax base which dries smudge resistant until moistened (water/sweat/tears), which is why sealer is a life saver.

I'd keep the paint around, just maybe for testing out particular facial markings for future projects (ie: Using the red for a Painted Lady cosplay).

That is what I have been using it for up until now, lol.

Pro Tip: Watch Drag Queen Make-up Tutorials on Youtube or watch RuPaul's Drag Race.

I believe in one episode they say that spraying hairspray on your face when you're done helps keep the makeup on. DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT. I might be WAY wrong. Do your research! :P

But they definitely know how to paint a face...so I'd start there and get as much info as you can! That's what I'll be doing when I do my first cosplay next month.

I don't really think that makeup sounds like it can be salvaged so its probably worth investing in something higher quality but personally I'd recommend Snazaroo over Ben Nye any day. It's cheaper too.
