I have an idea for steampunking up a character who is a hunter, and replacing her bow and arrows with a gun. What would be convincing for a hunting type gun or rifle?
The kind of gun I would love to carry in a steampunk ensemble is a blunderbuss.
But I don't think that's a hunting gun, as you can't shoot at a target accurately from a distance. It sprays projectiles in a large cone shaped area inside of which people hope not to be standing.
There's also the problem that just basing the thing off a Victorian hunting rifle might run afoul of convention weapon rules -- at least one con I go to doesn't allow replicas of "modern" weapons, which I think they define as ... post-American civil war? and later. Presumably this is to avoid having people walking around at a con with something that could be mistaken for a real working gun.
I guess I'll just be trying to cobble together something that looks like it could shoot straight over a long distance, and other than that I can make it out of anything vaguely gun-shaped. I'd still love some suggestions. Thanks in advance.
