crushed panne velvet color issue

i recently bought this material for a costume, but i noticed under natural daylight that it looks purple, while in the store and according to the bolt it was on, it was royal blue... my question is, is it possible to dye it to get rid of the purple effect?

Blue is a primary colour and purple is not. If you added more blue you'd just get darker purple.

Find out if you can return it on the basis that the lighting in the store was really misleading, if it's that bad. You may just have to suck up the loss and try again, and be careful in future. It's a common problem in fluorescent-lit stores.

I would doubt it - it's probably a lot of synthetic material and even if it wasn't, dye is transparent. No amount of blue you throw at it will entirely cover up the red that is causing the purple, unfortunately - you'd have to go a lot darker (if that was even possible) and in the end it would probably just turn black/grey.

But ! It might not be as bad as you think it is, too. I had that happen with a fabric for myself once. I saw it in sunlight and thought it was horrible - but I've taken pictures of it and looked at it more and it's okay. Other times I've had to buy new fabric - but I've learned now to get a swatch first so it doesn't happen very often any more.

Maybe post some pictures for comparison so other people can see how "bad" it is ?

I just wonder if it's truly purple outside or if it will still work.

If it's from somewhere like Jo-Ann's they do take returns on cut fabric so long as it hasn't been washed or anything.

Really ? D: It should be on the receipt that it can be returned ! I've only done it once before, but I was so thankfully they had that option for such times.

You might be able to sell it on here or on eBay - if you don't think you'd use it for something else.

i had the skirt half sewn together by the time i saw it, so i couldn't take all of it back... the person who had it commissioned doesn't want it to be purple part of the time

Unfortunately, it is best to avoid anything labeled "royal blue" if you do not want purple. Royal blue is only one shade off from purple, and under any light other than white, all you see is what you saw.

I would go ahead and finish the skirt, and then send the buyer photos of under natural light. Who knows, she may love it.
