Feedback: Stop allowing dealers to sell bootlegged merchandise. The massive Conspiracy Comics booth sold ONLY BOOTLEGGED FIGURES. I actually approached the general manager about this and only got a series of "okay. okay. okay" in response. He claimed to not even know who his distributor was. YOU'RE THE GENERAL MANAGER. OF COURSE YOU KNOW. Selling bootleg Nendoroids for $55-60 (original retail prices for the REAL ones are roughly $35-40) and bootlegged PVC statues for $70-100+ is abhorrent. I expected better from a brick and mortar comic book store that's based outside of P-Mall and other obvious Chinese-made bootleg importers.

This is precisely why I had to tell my Anime Figures and Statues panel audience not to buy figures in the dealer's room unless you can identify fakes, because most of them are fake. The convention claims to not allow the sale of bootlegged merch, yet turns a blind eye when it actually happens. What gives?

I'm so sorry! I realized how overburdened my schedule was and tried to formally drop out as the fifth person (knowing the panel should have been able to stay afloat with four panellists), but I wasn't removed from the panel until a few days before the convention. I really wanted to be on it but I knew I'd miss out on a lot of time with my group with back-to-back panels and photoshoots taking up my Saturday.

We did this with the Madoka panel too! Merino and I were so happy to see such a huge turnout. Unfortunately we were booked right next to some kind of live music/singing event in Plaza B, so we had trouble leading discussions with our audience.

I got a Madoka neckline sunburn... gem outline on my chest and all. It was so cold in costume because of the strong winds, but the sun was shining brightly all day, so I should've expected that.

As in having just as many awards as normal, but trophies for the top three as well? That might be something special. The inukshuks are nice, so maybe some other Canada-themed statues would be appropriate? I never really liked the gaudy sort of sports trophies given out at US cons.

Fairly uneventful year for me. Had an enjoyable con with no major complaints.

PROS

- I was glad to see the Otakubaloo move out further out in the parking lot. Definitely helped with some of the traffic flow around the TCC
- Not that I bought anything, but the food trucks/stations were a great idea.
- Increased number of garbage cans! Always a good thing.
- The weather! While it was on the cold side for some, it worked in my favor for the warm costumes I chose to wear.

CONS
- Nominoichi: I explicitly heard a table said they were selling hand made jewelry and they had a lot of it. I also saw another table with an excessive amount of those popular alpacas (at least 20 on their table for $60 each). For something that is supposed to be a flea market of people selling their extra/unwanted merchandise, some people sure seem to try to take advantage of it...

Yeah, the nominoichi seemed to have an overflow of crafter's corner and dealer's room people this year, selling a lot of things that did not seem used or seemed to be handmade, lolita/J-fashion swap meet tables aside. Certainly more than I noticed in the last couple of years (I can't REALLY count last year though, since I had a table that year).

yeah i even noticed that some of the sellers at nomi were still putting stuff at retail prices. Which was a real turndown for me as you would expect them to be sold cheaper. I know the sellers want to make money, but don't put things at excessive prices when you can find the same item brand new at the dealers room.

First, I want to say that this perspective is from an anime north first-timer, but this is not my first anime convention. I want to say that before going I was sort of reluctant and questioning my choice, but this was quickly changed by my expirience there.
This is the most well-organized, cleanest, and educational anime convention I have ever gone too. The whole idea behind having panels hosted by experts on the subject and discussing interesting topics is great. There were many things I learned about some series and games I liked from the panels, as well as many new interests I found because of them. Overall I had a very positive view behind this and it is something that should always be kept, continued and improved upon.
My main complaint behind the panels is the audience, people really need to keep their voices down in order to hear the hosts, especially ones that don't have microphones. Second, I think panels should not only adress experts on the subject, but also consider those that are new to that particlar topic or are interested. I think adition of video or media could help some panels as it makes for a better expirience overall for both newbies and experts. The panels could also be a bit more organized to support the use of media, none of the panels I went to had movies/pictures/music.

Other aspects such as the line to get the badge was a turnoff for me at the begining, but with a convention this big it is to be expected. I just brought my DS and talked to people but the weather was annoying. It wasn't so bad. The dealer's room had enough space to move around, I even had the chance to take some pictures in there when there wasn't a large crowd nearby and not blocking the flow of the crowd. The selection of items in the dealer's room seemed fair, yet I could not find a single pokemon shirt during the three days I was there. Video game stores has mostly inflated prices, I mostly buy on amazon/ebay and its tough to beat those prices but games like Final Fantasy X were being sold for $30 and I had recently purchased mine for $18 online in good conditions. Okami for PS2 was being sold for $40 and I found it for $20 on amazon. Basically, no game in those stores was at around the same price as online, it was always at least 10 dollars above, which I find kind of a ripoff.
Another thing is I found it hard to meet new people, I only knew my friend from univeristy who invited me and the people we shared a room with. I didn't exchange any emails or contact info with anyone at the convention, which is sad because I was looking forward to making new friends. I barely have friends who don't drink and like geeky stuff. Maybe the con has events where people can meet others but I did not see them. This could be something that could be adressed.

I had an amazing expirience overall, much better than I was anticipating it to be, and will hopefully go next year.

Every year people complain about this issue and every year someone from AN asks them to join the team to help out and they don't. As far as I know AN doesn't have experts on bootlegs on their dealers room team, so they do not feel comfortable asking the dealers to remove most things as they can't prove it's fake. They really need someone who can go around and do this as dealers should not be selling false goods like that. Dealers should be signing off saying they won't sell fake products and if they are asked to remove the pieces they will do so without question.

Hell maybe next year AN can run a 'can you spot the fake' game show and the winner gets a staff position, because the team really needs people that can spot fakes. They need to advertise for this stuff more too. Having multiple people with varying strengths would be a plus.

...although from the sounds of it, the dealers room would be pretty empty if AN got a team together (fine by me as I don't buy anything at the dealers room, stuff there is too expensive).

^ It would just free up room for the massive wait list of reputable dealers that have been waiting to get into the dealers room for 4 years.

Nay, I saw you removal from the program/ANpanels before the con I was just surprised the other two didn't show up. I find that panels run faster/smoother with more people in the panelist because the flow of the topic pull to different people strengths. There was a lot of passes on my part as try to do lead into to the next item with just two people. Also having a mic cutting out randomly wasn't helpful.

I actually forced a 1hour breaks into my scheduled on the Saturday. There only so much walking my cosplay shoes can do.

I'm glad the Madoka panel got a bigger room. (Always in the tiny room of the top floor of the DT the past 2 years )

Actually I don't mind for certain items to be sold at retails price if they are hard to find now because the alternative is ebay and everything is priced much higher there usually. I gaff at over retail price though because they payed more then that initially. >_<

Most items I sale at Half price or 2/3'd of the original price to move them.

I found the nomi. a mix of good deals and over-priced merch.

People selling new items at retail prices seemed odd though -- I thought this was a yard-sale type set up?

Thank you for your comments on this. The den mother in the plaid skirt is my youngest sister! ^_^ I'll let her know. Actually she was on a secret double mission to out Den Parent volunteers who weren't doing their jobs this year. I want to make sure that slackers are not asked back as volunteers. ^_^ Glad to hear some feedback from contestants on this.

Do you mean the Masquerade Directors, (who are a boy and a girl), or the MC? The MC did not get to talk to everyone like he usually does. He was very displeased with this as he likes the opportunity to speak with the contestants to make sure he can deliver their entry in the most helpful way.

Sorry for those of you who got skipped.

Awesome! This discussion comes up every year, both internally and externally. It's a matter of manpower and knowledge. We have staff who can deal with bootleg DVD's and other merch, but it takes specialists to know what they're looking at in Plushies, statues, toys, games, etc. For example, I could spot Godzilla related boots, but not many other people on staff, if any could.

If you have specific expertise would you be willing to volunteer to help the dealers room people identify this stuff at the begining of the weekend? We could definitely use the help I'm sure. ^_^

We don't have a "top three" system now, so it would either be:

-Giving out a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophy and nothing else (With no divisional system just everyone in the same level)
OR
-Keeping our current system of "excellence deserves award" and giving out a trophy to Best In Show and a trophy to Best Workmanship in Show, and then awards and ribbons out to all the other excellence winners (the number of which fluctuates from year to year based on who the judges feel went above and beyond).

Personally I'm a big fan of our current system. I think it's more encouraging, allows people to grow, and gives us the opportunity to award more great costumers.

I don't really partake much in terms of panels and whatnot. I just go there for the atmosphere and have fun.

My only problem was the Dealers Room. I just didn't think there was enough space. I usually wait for the end of the day, or Sunday, but it was still unbelievably crowded that my friend and I couldn't move.

For the Nominoichi comments, I can only speak for myself, but I had higher prices on some of my stuff because it's long out of production (eg. Digimon figures/Zelda figures). I'd guess there's other tables that were doing the same (I know there was at least one other table selling old Digimon figures too), so that might account for some of the high prices people were seeing.

As for selling 'current' stuff at the same price as the Dealer's Room...I can't really speak on that, as most of my stuff wasn't really current enough to be found in the Dealer's Room. And when I did get a chance to wander around, it was near the end of the event and there wasn't much left.

I did notice some of the 'crafter/dealer' tables that were mentioned before too, and I thought it was a bit strange how they had piles and piles of the same things. I'm not exactly sure how to prevent that though, as simply limiting the number of, say, Pokemon plush (just an example) any table can have could screw over legit sellers as well.

Just my thoughts as a seller

I was surprised by the seller they brought a full tray of contact lenses for sale new. O__o They looked like they wanted into the dealer rooms and didn't get it so they booked a table and try maybe the artist alley.

You can't govern what people bring but you can report them so that don't get a table again.
